ALAMOGORDO, NM — On Saturday, May 16, 2026, the City of Alamogordo, Alamogordo MainStreet, and community partners will host a special dual dedication ceremony in historic downtown, honoring local history while advancing ongoing revitalization efforts along New York Avenue. The day will culminate with the Alamogordo premiere of an acclaimed local filmmaker’s latest documentary at the Flickinger Center for the Performing Arts.
Morning Ribbon Cuttings Honor Law Enforcement Legacy and Family Legacy
The day’s events begin at 10:00 a.m. (or noon per some listings) with two ribbon cuttings celebrating community heroes and contributors.
• First stop: Corner of 10th Street and New York Avenue for the dedication of the Sheriff Bill Rutherford Memorial Star. Rutherford was the first known law enforcement officer in the area killed in the line of duty in 1923. General Hydronics Utilities (owned by Edwin Boles and Charles Martin) sponsored the memorial, with the Tularosa Basin Historical Society creating and installing the historical placard.
• Second stop: A short walk to the corner of 9th Street and New York Avenue (near 822 New York Avenue) for the unveiling of the Sheffield Family Clock. This ornate historic street clock, inscribed with “Est. 1898” and “Alamogordo,” was donated by the Sheffield family as a gift to the city’s downtown revitalization. It stands near the site where family patriarch Leonard Sheffield broke ground for the Montgomery Ward building in 1971.
The Sheffield family — longtime pillars of Alamogordo’s business and civic life — operated hardware, furniture, and other stores on New York Avenue for decades. Leonard Sheffield expanded downtown retail, served in the New Mexico Legislature, and supported Holloman Air Force Base. Later, son Larry Sheffield and his wife Tara led major historic restorations of buildings like the Century Building (919–921 New York Ave.), preserving Mesker fronts, tin ceilings, and original architecture from 1898. Siblings John and Janet also contributed to maintaining these properties.
Nolan Ojeda, Executive Director of Alamogordo MainStreet, emphasized the event’s significance: “Downtown Alamogordo is more than buildings and streets—it is the shared story of the people who built this community through service, sacrifice, entrepreneurship, and civic pride.” Mayor (or representative) proclamations and brief remarks are planned. The free, public event invites local officials, law enforcement, and residents.
Evening Movie Premiere: “The Cosmic Trigger” at Flickinger Center
At 6:00 PM, the day’s celebrations continue just blocks away at the Flickinger Center for the Performing Arts (1110 New York Ave.) with the Alamogordo premiere of The Cosmic Trigger: Trinity 1945, a feature-length documentary by Larry L. Sheffield of First Light Productions.
The film examines declassified documents, archival footage, and witness accounts of unexplained aerial phenomena (UAPs) reported over southern New Mexico following the Trinity Test on July 16, 1945 — including the famous “Green Fireballs.” It builds on Sheffield’s award-winning atomic history trilogy (Alamogordo, Center of the World, Trinity 1945; Oppenheimer After Trinity; The Atomic Rocketeer), which has earned over 33 festival awards. The world premiere occurred at the Oppenheimer Festival in Los Alamos in August 2025.
Seating is limited; tickets are available now via Etix.com.
Larry Sheffield, an Alamogordo native whose grandfather worked on the Manhattan Project, described the film as a rigorous look at documented events that challenge our understanding of the atomic frontier’s skies. The premiere ties together the day’s themes of history, community pride, and Alamogordo’s unique place in world events.
A Day of Community Pride
These events highlight Alamogordo MainStreet’s ongoing makeover of New York Avenue and downtown, turning historic spaces into vibrant community assets. Attendees are encouraged to explore the area, support local businesses, and celebrate the city’s past, present, and future.
