Alamogordo, NM (March 29, 2026) — Firefighters continue to make steady progress securing the perimeter of the Sago Fire on the Mescalero Apache Reservation, which has burned approximately 300 acres since it was reported on Thursday, March 26, 2026. The fire remains at 0% containment but is now mostly smoldering and creeping slowly within established control lines.
The blaze is located about 19 miles east of Mescalero, NM, near the Sago and Cow Camp areas. The Gila Las Cruces Type 3 Incident Management Team (under Incident Commander Marcus Cornwell) assumed command on Friday evening and is treating this as a full suppression incident.
Current Situation
• Personnel: 103 firefighters and support staff are actively working the fire.
• Fire Behavior: Activity has decreased significantly. Crews are reinforcing handlines, dozer lines, and retardant drops along the perimeter. The threat to nearby values at risk, including the Cow Camp Facilities located roughly three miles north, continues to diminish.
• Resources on Scene:
• 7 fire engines
• 3 water tenders
• 4 bulldozers
• 1 hotshot crew
• 1 twenty-person (Type 2IA) contract crew
• 1 helicopter base manager
The team is working closely with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the Mescalero Agency to plan post-containment repairs and keep the community informed. No structures are currently threatened, and no evacuation orders have been issued.
Weather Outlook
• Monday: Similar conditions expected.
• Tuesday: Daytime temperatures drop about 10 degrees; winds may increase slightly.
• Wednesday: A chance of precipitation could aid suppression efforts.
Safety and Restrictions
Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) remains in effect over the fire area. The public is strongly urged not to fly drones, as they can endanger aerial firefighting operations and personnel.
Road Advisory: Avoid Sago Canyon Road and Turkey Canyon Road to ensure the safety of firefighters and equipment. No formal road closures are in place at this time.
Class III High Fire Danger Restrictions are active across the Mescalero Reservation:
• Campfires permitted only in designated areas at Silver Lake.
• No fireworks allowed.
• Outdoor smoking permitted only if ashes are fully extinguished in a proper container.
• Charcoal grills and wood-burning stoves are allowed; fireplaces/wood stoves must have spark screens.
• Chainsaws and other combustion engines require functioning spark arrestors.
