ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — The high school basketball postseason begins this weekend with first-round games featuring four Otero County teams in the New Mexico Activities Association state playoffs.
First-round games feature home contests for higher seeds, and Tularosa’s boys are the only Otero team playing at home. The Wildcats (24-3), who earned a No. 2 seed in the Class 3A tournament and are ranked 29th in the state by MaxPreps , will host No. 15 West Las Vegas at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The Wildcats defeated West Las Vegas 69-64 on Jan. 2 during a swing through the north.
A win over West Las Vegas would put Tularosa in next week’s Class 3A quarterfinals against either East Mountain or Robertson.
Tularosa’s girls (16-12), ranked 77th statewide by MaxPreps , are also in the 3A state playoffs, seeded 11th with a 6 p.m. game at No. 6 Crownpoint on Friday.
The Alamogordo boys (17-11), who claimed a spot in the Class 5A state playoffs as the No. 15 seed and hold a MaxPreps state ranking of 26th , will travel to No. 2 Cleveland (23-6) for a first-round game at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Cleveland went 8-2 in District 1-5A, with its only district losses coming against Volcano Vista, the No. 1 seed in this year’s playoffs.
The Mescalero boys (13-15), seeded 15th in Class 2A and ranked 94th in the state by MaxPreps , will take on No. 2 Pecos (25-3) in the first round at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The NMAA state tournament brackets were released earlier this week, with quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals scheduled for March 11-14 at various locations to be announced.

This is a fantastic article Chris. Thank you for your research and for pulling all these strands together.
I have been noticing some usage of the Communist Manifesto playbook here in Otero county and the state as a whole.
The irony is that Chris is describing a power struggle within the GOP. Calling it "Communist" actually hides the real issue, which is Authoritarianism, leaders ignoring rules to keep power. That is a threat to everyone, regardless of which party or economic system they prefer.
