Gallup, NM — The Mescalero Apache Chiefs boys basketball team delivered a dominant opening performance before falling in the championship round Friday at the Striking Eagle Native American Invitational.
Chiefs Roll Past Rough Rock (AZ) 70–25
Mescalero Apache opened the tournament with one of its strongest outings of the season, overpowering Rough Rock (AZ) 70–25 in a wire‑to‑wire victory.
The Chiefs showcased balanced scoring and aggressive defense, with Landyn Hiles leading the way with 15 points.
Eldon Enjady added 11, while Anthony Yuzos and Ferron Bighunter each contributed 10.
Avin Yellowcloud chipped in 8, helping the Chiefs improve to 6–7 on the season.
The win advanced Mescalero Apache to the Boys Eagle Bracket championship game against Thoreau.
Championship Game: Thoreau Tops Mescalero Apache 41–30
In the title matchup, the Chiefs battled but came up short, falling 41–30 to Thoreau in a defensive contest.
Landyn Hiles again led Mescalero Apache with 10 points, while Anthony Yuzos scored 6 and Deacon Martinez added 5.
The loss drops the Chiefs to 6–8 overall.
