ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — In the quiet expanse of southern New Mexico, where desert winds meet mountain skies, a sanctuary of healing and empowerment is changing lives—one hoofbeat at a time. Desert Dreams Riding Academy, located at 54 Coyote Flats Road, Alamogordo has become a beacon of growth for young minds, offering free ten-week empowerment programs that nurture self-respect, emotional intelligence, and resilience through the transformative power of equestrian arts.
Founded on the belief that horses and nature together can sculpt confident futures, Desert Dreams blends horsemanship with heart-centered mentorship. Children and teens engage in riding lessons, trail walks, and reflective interactions with horses—experiences that foster trust, empathy, and personal strength.
“It’s not only about riding,” the academy shares in its recently published article linked on their website, How Nature and Horses Help Build Resilience. “It’s about the moments of reflection and connection… nurturing seeds of confidence that sprout into lifelong resilience.”
Leadership Rooted in Purpose
At the helm is Robert Barnard, a seasoned rancher and horseman whose five years of youth-focused equine work have shaped the academy’s mission. His programs are designed to help young people navigate emotional challenges, build self-awareness, and stride confidently into their futures.
Supporting this vision is Stephen Heetland, a retired Chaplain Colonel from the U.S. Army. As mentor and advisor, Heetland brings a wealth of experience in personal development and spiritual guidance, enriching the academy’s nurturing environment. Together, Barnard and Heetland ensure that every child is seen, supported, and empowered.

In a world often dominated by screens and stress, Desert Dreams Riding Academy offers something timeless: the healing rhythm of hooves, the wisdom of nature, and the quiet strength of a horse’s gaze. For Alamogordo’s youth, it’s more than a riding school—it’s a place to grow, connect, and thrive. As one that grew up riding horses on my grandfathers farm during the summers. This unique offering deserves attention.
