HOUSE SPEAKER MIKE JOHNSON BRINGS NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT TO GABE VASQUEZ CONGRESSIONAL RACE

ALAMOGORDO — The race that will decide who represents Otero County in Washington is drawing national firepower, and it’s only August.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) travels to Albuquerque on Wednesday, Aug. 26, to campaign for Republican Greg Cunningham, the retired Marine and former Albuquerque Police Department detective challenging Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District — the district that includes Alamogordo, Holloman Air Force Base, Tularosa, Cloudcroft and the rest of Otero County.

The two are scheduled to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. Wednesday alongside state law enforcement leaders. Cunningham’s campaign, which announced the visit Monday morning, said the group will discuss public safety, border security, and the cost of crime on New Mexico families and small businesses.

VASQUEZ CAMPAIGN RESPONDS

The Vasquez campaign did not wait for the Speaker’s plane to land.
Campaign spokesperson Patricia Socarras Santiago told New Mexico Political Report that Johnson’s visit is proof Cunningham would be a reliable vote for President Donald Trump’s agenda if sent to Congress.

Greg Cunningham is once again bending the knee to MAGA extremists, and this week they’re coming to Albuquerque in droves to buy his loyalty,” Santiago said. “He already accepted $403,000 from Trump loyalists; he’s endorsed by Speaker Johnson and Yvette Herrell; and he has said himself his number one priority is doing Trump’s bidding. Greg Cunningham is showing us his priorities — supporting MAGA’s tariffs, ICE raids, and healthcare cuts — not New Mexico.”

The Democratic Party of New Mexico issued its own statement ahead of the visit. Communications director Daniel Garcia tied Johnson directly to federal budget decisions that hit New Mexico households hard.

“Make no mistake — Mike Johnson is responsible for the Medicaid and SNAP cuts that were made to fund tax cuts for wealthy elites,” Garcia said. “Now, Greg Cunningham is cozying up to Johnson and making it clear that he sides with his extremist party leadership over New Mexico.” Garcia added that “Vasquez keeps delivering for New Mexicans, while Cunningham keeps promising to gut programs that feed our kids and deliver for right-wing extremists and wealthy elites.”

Those cuts are not abstract in Otero County, where a significant share of households rely on Medicaid and SNAP benefits.

CUNNINGHAM’S PITCH

Cunningham, who also previously owned a private investigations agency, has run on a message aimed squarely at voters tired of Washington noise.  His campaign website says he “understands that political rhetoric has done more to split neighbors and families than solve problems” and that “he believes there is far more that unites us than divides us.” The site describes him as a candidate guided by conservative values and his faith who will pursue “commonsense solutions shaped by New Mexicans, for New Mexicans.”

He won the June 2 Republican primary decisively, taking roughly 84% of the vote against challenger Jose Orozco. Vasquez ran unopposed on the Democratic side.

Cunningham has drawn top-tier national backing. Trump endorsed him in April, posting on Truth Social that Cunningham has the “Wisdom and Courage required to Defend our Country, Support our Brave Military, Veterans, and Law Enforcement and Ensure

“In a joint statement, Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Majority Whip Tom Emmer and House GOP Conference Chair Lisa McClain called Cunningham “a patriot who will help us continue to deliver safe streets, secure borders, lower costs, and peace through strength.”

WHY BOTH PARTIES ARE THROWING EVERYTHING AT CD2

New Mexico’s 2nd is the only competitive congressional seat in the state — and one of the most competitive in the country.
The district covers the southern half of New Mexico, including Las Cruces, plus the southern quarter of Albuquerque. It’s home to about 710,491 people, with a median household income of $60,933, and is roughly 60% Hispanic. Its Cook Partisan Voting Index rating is EVEN, making it the least Democratic district in a state with an all-Democratic congressional delegation.

The recent history explains the attention:

 In 2022, Vasquez unseated then-Rep. Yvette Herrell by less than a point, 50.3% to 49.6%.

In 2024, Vasquez beat Herrell again, 52.1% to 47.9% — while Trump carried the same district 49.9% to 48.1%.
It is one of a handful of Trump-won seats Democrats are defending nationwide this cycle.

An internal Republican poll conducted in late April by co/efficient put Vasquez ahead of Cunningham by only two points, 43% to 41%, within the survey’s 3.29% margin of error, with the generic congressional ballot tied at 45%–45%.

The same survey found Vasquez at 34% favorable and 42% unfavorable — a net negative image, including -16% among independents. As with any internal poll, readers should weigh the source: it was commissioned by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

 MONEY

Vasquez holds a clear financial edge.

As of June 30, Vasquez had raised $3.78 million to Cunningham’s $1.51 million. Cunningham’s campaign narrowly outraised Vasquez during one earlier stretch of the cycle, though Vasquez retained a sizable cash-on-hand advantage. Those totals do not include outside spending, which is expected to be substantial.

Outside money is already moving in. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee launched a streaming ad campaign earlier this month highlighting Vasquez’s record on public lands and wildfire response funding, running in English and Spanish across YouTube and other platforms.

Otero County has historically leaned Republican, and was the seat of the state Republican chair Amy Barela until she was removed by court order. Turnout here matters in a district that has twice been decided at the margins. Wildfire funding, public lands, Holloman AFB, health care access in rural southern New Mexico, border policy and grocery prices are all on the ballot in the form of one House seat.

Wednesday’s Albuquerque event is unlikely to be the last national visit. With Election Day on Nov. 3 and both parties treating this district as must-win, residents from Alamogordo to Las Cruces can expect a heavy dose of mailers, television spots and out-of-state visitors between now and November.
