Tiger Stadium Premiers New Turf Field and Makeover this Friday

In a release from APS it is stated that the Alamogordo Public Schools is proud to announce "the near completion of a major upgrade at Tiger Stadium, featuring a brand-new, state-of-the-art artificial turf football field. This investment underscores APS’s commitment to student safety, athletic excellence, and community pride!"

After nearly a decade of heavy use, the previous turf had become brittle, torn, and matted, no longer offering the safety or performance our athletes deserve. The new surface features cutting-edge synthetic turf technology designed to provide a durable, safe, and high-performance field for Tiger athletes.

“This new turf reflects our commitment to providing the best possible environment for our student-athletes and community,” said Director of Athletics Alan Edmonson. “It’s more than just a field, it’s a space for growth, teamwork, and unforgettable memories. We wanted a field that was unique to Alamogordo and encompassed the rich history and traditions of our community.”

Head Football Coach AJ Cisco added, “Our program is excited to be able to play on a surface that is top of the line and unique to our community. With the steps taken in recent years by APS to improve facilities, it’s a great time to be a Tiger.”

A Unique Design that Honors Alamogordo

The new Tiger Stadium field was designed to showcase both performance and local pride:

• Gray Turf Surface – Inspired by fighter jet colors, symbolizing Alamogordo’s strong relationship with Holloman Air Force Base. The gray surface also stays cooler than traditional green turf and resists UV damage, giving it a longer lifespan.

• Only Gray Field in New Mexico – Tiger Stadium will feature the only gray playing surface in the state and one of just a handful nationwide.

• Special Design Elements – “Alamo” at midfield ties directly to the school’s fight song, while the endzones will reflect the iconic gypsum dunes at White Sands National Park.

Superintendent Michael Crabtree emphasized the broader vision:

“This project represents more than a new playing surface. It symbolizes our district’s dedication to excellence, our pride in Alamogordo’s heritage, and our commitment to providing safe, modern facilities for our students."

The new turf is part of a district-wide initiative for safety and facility upgrades, which also includes new elementary turf playfields, updated furniture, fresh paint and flooring, district-wide security cameras, and improved perimeter fencing. We are proud to provide facilities that our athletes, students, and families can celebrate for years to come.”

The new turf is one piece of Alamogordo Public Schools’ broader effort to modernize campuses and athletic facilities, building environments that honor the district’s pride, tradition, and commitment to student success.
