Former New Mexico Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small Nominated for Biden Administration USDA Role
Former New Mexico Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small, Democrat from Las Cruces, represented New Mexico's 2nd congressional district for a single term from 2019 to 2021, has been nominated by President Biden, as undersecretary for rural development, citing her previous work in economic development in rural communities and colonias in New Mexico,
Torres Small is the former congresswoman for our district, which encompasses all of southern New Mexico. The district is currently represented by Republican Yvette Herrell, who defeated Torres Small in the 2020 election.
Xochitl Torres Small is an experienced attorney focused on water issues before she won her seat in Congress on her first run for public office. She served one term and was narrowly defeated by Yvette Herrell.
The position, requires U.S. Senate confirmation which is viewed as a technicality as Ms. Torres Small is not seen as a controversial pick. Sen. Martin Heinrich said in a statement, adding that "her experience and her dedicated and pragmatic approach to public service will be incredibly valuable at a time when rural communities across the country recover from the pandemic, diversify their economies, and build long-term, sustainable growth."
In her position she will oversee billions in loan and grant programs of which New Mexico and other western states greatly benefit from in regards to water project and economic development grants for rural regions.
