The US Geological Survey has now confirmed a 5.4 temblor as the strongest of three stronger-than-usual earthquakes to rock the area of Southern New Mexico Saturday night at 7:47 pm. The quakes also included magnitude 3.4 and 2.9 quakes. Alamogordo residents reported feeling the 5.4 which was first reported as a 4.7 and then a 5.3 now confirmed as a 5.4.
Shortly after, there were two smaller aftershocks, a 3.4 and 2.9 magnitude, near the spot of the original tremor.
The USGS says they occurred at 7:57 and 9:24 p.m. Saturday, but the later two were likely undetectable or not noticeable to most people excepting for wildlife and house pets for those in the borderland such as Alamogordo.
Back on Feb. 14. 2025, the area was rocked by a 4.9 magnitude earthquake about 30 miles northwest of Toyah, Texas in Reeves County which some locals felt.
Saturday temblor was part of a swarm of 46 mostly small earthquakes in the area since early April, USGS data indicates. There's a 65% chance of a strong aftershock within a week, it said.
The Geological survey's "Did You Feel It" list shows responses from the Texas cities of Arlington, Midland, Lubbock and New Mexico cities of Alamogordo, Las Cruces and smallers villages reporting the shake.
No injuries were reported and no property damage is reported either.
Overcast , with a high of 88 and low of 69 degrees. Overcast in the morning, partly cloudy during the afternoon, clear overnight.
It's becoming more and more clear that the worst thing you can do for the environment is to listen to environmentalists.
The natural cycle of any pine forest is to grow, burn, repeat.
Looking at the city's website, I don't see anything about 4th of July fireworks, so it looks like this is meant to replace the usual fireworks show.
An even more important story than making sure our nuclear bombs are up to date, is that just Wed. the supreme court has basically stated that Texas and another land owner had no standing in blocking a temporary nuclear storage facility that is planned for Texas and New Mexico.
you must be a very smart fellow - you seem to have a handy solution for everything!
