Alamogordo Tigers Basketball Coach James Voight Leaving Hired by The University of the Southwest

Coach James Voight resigns as Head Basketball Coach at Alamogordo to lead the University of the Southwest Program. Voight was the Head Coach at Alamogordo High School in Alamogordo, NM (2018-2021). Coach Voight has accumulated a record of 184 wins and 92 losses during his 10-year high school coaching career.

In 2014, Coach Voight and Dexter High School won the New Mexico State Championship and finished as a state runner-up in 2013. He was named 2014 Coach of the Year by NMPREPS and guided his programs to 6 Regular Season District Titles, 5 District Tournament Titles and 8 State Playoff appearances.

Voight brought to Alamogordo with him eight years of experience as a head coach and joined the Tigers District 3-5A boys basketball program following a 15-13, 6-0 season 2018 and a 20-9, 6-0 run for the 2016-17 season.

For the 20/21 Season

Coach James Voight led his guys in  District 3,  Division Class  5A to an overall record 10-2-0 with a State Ranking  15th place and a #2 District ranking behind Las Cruces.

The University of the Southwest locate in Hobbs, New Mexico announced via its Athletic Department that it is very excited to name James Voight as the newest Men's Basketball Head Coach. Voight graduated from the University of the Southwest in 2011. Coach Voight was a member of the Men's Basketball program from 2009-2011. He was named to the NAIA Daktronics Academic All-American Team in 2011. Voight played in 47 games for USW over two seasons.

"I'm extremely excited to bring in Coach Voight to head our Men's Basketball program" said Director of Athletics Steve Appel. "There was a ton of interest in this position and I feel we got the right person. Coach Voight has the potential to bring solid stability to this program. He is a coach with knowledge of our institution, understands our mission, and understands the landscape of regional talent. I can't wait to see what he can do in the next couple of years."

Voight earned his Master's Degree in Secondary Education from Eastern New Mexico University in 2014. He and his wife, Iris, will reside in Hobbs with their two sons Julian (12) and James (2 months).

Alamogordo High School will begin a search and interview internal and external candidates for the vacancy.
