The Mescalero Apache High School’s football team had a banner year of success this season which concluded on Friday.
Landyn Hiles, is a Junior at the Mescalero Apache School and is a running back that set records of success. This season, Hiles finished the season with 1,068 rushing yards on 131 carries. The junior had 15 touchdowns, five games with more than 100 rushing yards and averaged 118 yards a game on the ground. His success was good enough to set a new career high rushing yards. Hiles has made several trips to the University of El Paso, in hopes of extending his football career.
Two seniors, defensive lineman Berwyn Duffy and defensive back Jason Kanseah, junior running back Landyn Hiles and sophomore tight end Avin Yellowcloud all made the all-district list.
Avin Yellowcloud had eight receptions for 62 yards and scored two touchdowns. He averaged 10 receiving yards a game and his longest reception was for 24 yards.
Jason Kanseah and Berwyn Duffy ended their high school careers with solid performances on the defensive side and were recognized for excellence by their coaches. Kanseah had one interception, where he returned the pick for 60 yards.
The NMAA reported that in addition to the all-district selections, a few area seniors are in the discussion of being selected to the north and south all-star game. The NMAA will release a list of seniors selected for the all-star game on Dec. 1, 2024.
