The Otero County Legislative Prayer Breakfast will return on Friday, January 9, 2026, continuing a tradition that has become one of Alamogordo’s most enduring civic gatherings. Now in its 47th year, the breakfast brings together legislators, clergy, and community members for prayer and reflection before the New Mexico Legislature convenes in Santa Fe.

Held at the Alamo Senior Center, the event begins with breakfast service at 6:45 a.m., followed by the program at 7 a.m.

Reservations are required by January 8, with proceeds benefiting the Senior Center. Organizers emphasize the breakfast’s non-partisan character, framing it as a spiritual send-off for lawmakers rather than a political rally.

Recent History

2025 (46th Annual): The breakfast was held on January 3, 2025, at the Alamo Senior Center. Community members gathered with legislators in a spirit of unity and prayer, continuing the tradition of bipartisan fellowship.

2024: The event was again hosted at the Senior Center, underscoring its role as a consistent venue for civic prayer and dialogue. The Chamber of Commerce promoted the breakfast as part of its broader calendar of community events.

Earlier Years: The breakfast traces its roots to 1980, when Maude Rathgeber of the Eagle Forum organized the first gathering to honor Otero County legislators. Attendance grew from about 20 participants to more than 200 by the mid-2010s.

In 2016, the 37th annual breakfast featured remarks from legislators including Ron Griggs, William Burt, and Yvette Herrell, alongside prayers from local pastors.

Civic Role

The breakfast has become a symbolic prelude to Otero County Days in Santa Fe, when local leaders and residents advocate for regional priorities. By grounding legislative work in prayer, the event underscores the community’s desire for wisdom, humility, and unity in governance.

Reservations for the 2026 breakfast can be made through Karl Melton (kmelton@co.otero.nm.us, 575-554-2083). The cost is $15 per person, cash only.
