We reported in our weekly police blotter that we had submitted an IPRA and once we had verified official information we would report on the incident. We held off on reporting until we could secure official documents from the Alamogordo Police Department.
We can now confirm receipt of preliminary investigative reports and that the death that occurred was that of Jett Dustin Sours age 35. The reason for death is being investigated and the released reports are draft reports subject to revision.
A memorial service for Mr. Sours is planned for Saturday October 12, 2024, at 11:00 am MST at Grady Methodist Church, Grady, New Mexico. All are welcome.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Jett Sours Scholarship Fund which will go towards his children’s college education. Contributions can be sent to: Citizens Bank of Clovis, attn: Jett Sours Scholarship Fund, 421 Pile St., Clovis, NM 88101.
The unexpected death does not appear to involve violence nor foul play based on the draft investigative reports.
Per the police report, three park employees who were tasked with cleanup of the park were approached by an older lady with a dog who advised them of a subject laying in the grass not moving. The city employees then drove by and yelled at the subject trying to get his attention, but he did not move. They then stopped to check on the subject. One city employee then tried to move his foot when they realized he was stiff and knew the subject was deceased."
The report stated that the victim Mr. Sours had been living at the Step House Alamogordo up until a few days prior, he had recently moved to apartment of his own and had struggled with substance abuse during various times of his life.
Upon arrival to the scene around 7:14 am officers checked for signs of life and did not observe any. The victims hat and wallet were found near the park entrance and the victim was approximately 30 feet away from the item laying face down with his shoes off and cell phone a couple feet away from him.
There were other details of the report that explain the scene that we will not report out of sensitivity to the memory of the victim and sensitivity to his ex-wife, children and mother.
It was reported that Mr. Sours had been sober for the last two months and was taking drug tests while staying at the Step House. He had recently moved out of the house and onto his own apartment.
