Evacuation Order South Fork Fire Near Ruidoso Grows to 15 Acres with Air Support
The Ruidoso Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is currently monitoring the South Fork Fire, which is burning on the Mescalero Apache reservation. The fire is approximately 2-3 miles from the Village of Ruidoso limits, specifically near the Upper Canyon area. According to the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), it is approximately 15 acres.
The Smokey Bear Hot Shots are actively responding to the fire, and interagency dispatch has ordered an air attack to combat the blaze. Due to these air operations, a Type 1 helicopter has been ordered to assist the others in water drops. A large air tanker and another Hot Shot crew have also been ordered for slurry drops. Aircraft will be drawing water from Grindstone Lake.
As a result, Grindstone Lake operations will be closed today to facilitate the air attack.
The Village of Ruidoso is issuing a "Go" status for the Upper Canyon and Brady Canyon. Anyone in that area needs to evacuate immediately.
In addition, the backend of Cedar Creek is being put on "Set" status. Anyone in that area needs to be prepared to evacuate if notified.
