The Otero County Detention center has had a history of unrest with a near riot scene occurring in 2017 with several prisoners refusing to follow orders and a lockdown ordered after a large disturbance.
The Otero County Sheriff’s Department confirmed an issue escalated on Tuesday resulting in approximately 14 police units from various law enforcement agencies dispatched to the local detention center to calm issues and to “restore order” to the facility. Additional information has not been released but an inside source who spoke on a condition of anonymity claimed that a fight broke out between elements within the facility and quickly escalated creating a situation of risk for the safety of staff and other inmates thus reinforcements were called in as a safety precaution. No further details have been released and we are awaiting a response and release of information from the Oteto County Sheriff’s office.
