Alamogordo MainStreet invites the public to vote for their favorite new mural and to participate in a reception and public unveiling of the murals on New York Avenue’s Alley #2 Arts project.

Sharon McDonald Mayor Pro Temp and board member of Alamogordo MainStreet responds to questions concerning the mural competition…

"We’ve gotten a few great questions about the Buffalo Soldier mural and why it’s not part of the Community Choice voting — so I’d love to share a little background.

First and foremost, we’re incredibly proud of this piece. It tells a powerful and often overlooked part of our shared history, and it’s already making an impact by sparking conversations and reflection — which is exactly what we hope public art will do.

Now, this particular mural came together a bit differently than the others in the project.

The artist behind it also served as the lead for the historical mural series — someone who’s deeply committed to honoring Alamogordo’s history, expanding public art in our community, and doing it all with a truly philanthropic heart. Their leadership helped guide the vision for the series, and coordination across multiple sites.

In the case of the Buffalo Soldier mural, they stepped in to complete the piece when it became clear that additional direction and continuity were needed to move the project forward in a way that honored its intent and timeline.

It’s also worth noting that this mural was painted on a much larger wall than the others in the voting pool, making a side-by-side comparison in a public vote a bit unfair to the artists working within smaller, standardized spaces.

So while it isn’t part of the voting process, it is absolutely central to the heart of this project — and we’re grateful for the artist’s dedication, care, and deep respect for the stories that shape our community.

Thanks so much for your support, your curiosity, and your investment in this work. We’re so proud of what’s been created — and we can’t wait to keep building from here."
