Organ Mountain Boys first place finish was a welcome victory for Coach David Nunez and a little bit of a welcome home.  Coach Nunez is a graduate of Alamogordo High School and was a star athlete in his own right and was coached by Bob Sepulveda

He always smiles hugely when he sees Bob and it’s a relationship of mutual respect as Bob Sepulveda is giddy with joy when he sees his alumni excel

Bob Sepulveda mentioned to is that “David Nunez is not only a well respected coach but is also a respected educator.  He teaches social studies in addition to coaching track and field and cross country. In 2109 he was named the Las Cruces Public Schools 2019 LCPS Teacher of the Year.”

Coach Bob Sepulveda said of his former athlete, “he is certainly respected as a coach having  a very successful and competitive program and giving Alamogordo a run for its money in district. In January of 2022, Nuñez, who has guided the cross country program at Organ Mountain and Oñate, as the school was previously named, for 27 years, was named the 2021 5A Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year by the New Mexico Track and Cross Country Coaches Association.”

So, of course Bob is always rooting for the Tigers to carry home the top medals especially at a meet named after him, but if it doesn’t, then Bob still smiles boldly when his former athlete, David Nunez runs a victory lap.

It was an exceptionally windy or blustery day for a track meet, as such no huge new records were broken, but the stands were full of adoring fans from around the region.  Alamogordo parents and fans came out in force to support the Tigers and to pay tribute to Coach Sepulveda who at age 88 was in attendance and shook hands with many adoring fans and student participants.
