New Mexico State Senator William “Bill” Burt (R-Alamogordo) today announced his retirement from the New Mexico Senate after 14 years of dedicated public service. Senator Burt will complete the remainder of his term through the end of 2024.

“After prayerful consideration and discussions with my family, I have made the difficult decision to retire from the New Mexico Senate at the end of this year,” said Senator Burt. “Representing the people of Otero, Chaves, and Lincoln counties has been the privilege of a lifetime, and I will always cherish the confidence and support of the voters in Senate District 33. I look forward to completing my term and supporting the next wave of leaders who will serve our communities and state well.”

Senator Burt was first appointed to the New Mexico Senate in 2011 by then-Governor Susana Martinez. He was subsequently elected by the voters in 2012 and then re-elected in 2016 and 2020 by significant margins. As a passionate supporter of the U.S. Armed Forces and military installations at Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range, Senator Burt was a champion for New Mexico veterans and their families. He served on the Military Base Planning Commission and the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee, and spearheaded the effort to create an income tax exemption for military retirement pay.

Senator Burt currently serves as a member of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, and as a member of the interim Revenue Stabilization and Tax Policy Committee, as well as the Science, Technology, and Telecommunications Committee.
