New Mexico Agriculture Report for the Week of January 13th 2024

I produce this report in cooperation with the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service which annually releases a bulletin highlighting key data about New Mexico's agriculture the bulletin reports that New Mexico's total value of agricultural production rose slightly to $ 3.71 billion last year. 

New Mexico farmers and ranchers purchased $2.5 billion worth of inputs an increase of 23% from the year before. New Mexico had 24,100 farms in 2022 a loss of 600 Farms from the year before. New Mexico held its national rankings as first in the nation for chili production, second for pecan production, fifth for onion production and ninth for milk production. The number one cash commodity for the state was milk, followed by cattle and calves, onions overtook pecans as the third largest cash commodity in the state shifting pecans to Fourth. Hay is fifth and ranked sixth was cotton.

Though it is winter New Mexico’s drought intensity levels remain at abnormally dry, severe or extreme, according to the most recent U.S. Drought Monitor. The Southwest Border Food Protection and Emergency Preparedness Center at New Mexico State University and the New Mexico Department of Agriculture remind producers of the seriousness of the drought situation.
