Alamogordo Proud Darian Jaramillo Named Superintendent Artesia Public Schools

Congratulations to Darian Jaramillo a 1987 graduate of Alamogordo High School. We add Darian Jaramillo to our spotlight of “Alamogordo Proud.” Many remember Darian Jaramillo as a student at Alamogordo High School that was talented in academics and in athletics.

Darian Jaramillo was one of several athletes featured in a book series published by 2nd Life Media on Coaches Robert & Marilyn Sepulveda and the influence of Coach Gary Hveem on the Alamogordo High School Athletics program. Book one titled Coach Robert (Bob) Louis Sepulveda: The Early Years released to critical acclaim, book two the Hveem Years was widely received. Books 3 and 4 are forthcoming.

Darian Jaramillo, in addition to her academic accomplishments, was an accomplished athlete and a part of Marilyn Sepulveda’s successful track and field teams. She was part of the team that accomplished a 2nd place state trophy in track and filed for Alamogordo High School in 1987.

She was also a member of the first place, state volleyball champions, from Alamogordo High School, under the guidance of Coach Debbie Scott in 1986.

Upon graduating from Alamogordo High School she attended to her higher education with a focus on teaching and education.

Jaramillo has a broad range of experience in education in New Mexico and Nevada that has spanned a period of 30 years. She worked in the public school districts of Alamogordo, Bernalillo, Los Lunas and Artesia. During her career, she taught kindergarten, third grade, fifth grade, and ninth- and eleventh-grade English.

She also served as principal of Alamogordo High School and Los Lunas High School.

Now she is accomplishing, yet again with the Board of Education of the Artesia Public Schools announcing the hiring of Darian Jaramillo as the next Superintendent of the Artesia Public Schools.

Mrs. Jaramillo will replace the current Superintendent, Thad Phipps, who recently announced his retirement, effective as of Aug. 31.

Her central office experience includes service as the Director of Secondary Schools for the Los Lunas Public Schools and the Director of Human Resources for the Bernalillo Public Schools. Most recently, Jaramillo has worked for the Artesia Public Schools as the principal of Zia Intermediate School.

She has received exemplary reviews for her work in all the positions that she has filled during her career.

Jaramillo’s husband, Tony, is a math teacher and coach at Artesia High School.

Darian and Tony have become full-fledged Bulldogs, are committed Artesians, and have expressed their joy in being a part of Artesia and Artesia Public Schools.

The Board is confident that Jaramillo will maintain the high standards of excellence and strong leadership modeled by the district’s prior superintendents.
