Alamogordo’s New York Avenue Cultural Arts and History District will be hosting 3 fun events this Friday and Saturday that is sure to entertain, energize and enlighten our community.

Start out Friday at Otero Arts at 1118 Indiana in the historic Womens Club Building. Otero Arts is pleased to present paintings by Maria Aragon at the Artspace, with an opening reception on May 5th from 5 – 7.

The Artspace is located at 1118 Indiana Ave., Alamogordo. The exhibition continues through May with the gallery open from 1-4 Thursday through Sundays. Aragon’s love of mythology and symbolism infuses her work with images from Hellenistic depictions of Apollo and Asian influence of the Buddha. As she said, the consequences of her interest in mythology meeting up with Asian art occurred during the time she worked at the Sackler/Freer Museums in Washington, D.C. This conjunction led to some of her canvases in this show. Her work carries a whimsical stream of consciousness that creates connections to her “Divine Mystery” series. The exhibit also includes landscapes and abstract pieces. According to Aragon, “It’s all about beauty, playing with color and symbolism.”

From there zip down to the 900 and 800 Blocks of New York Avenue. All stores are open till 10 pm for a special Block Party, live music, food trucks a special DJ from New Orleans, a beer garden and more.

Roadrunner Emporium inside is hosting a special appearance of Sage Gentlewing inside with guitar, live vocals and more. Outside and throughout Roadrunner affiliated artisans will be onsite showcasing their works to include Diana Sill, Linda Swenson and others.
