Fred Utter Jr., 92, of Tularosa, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on May 23, 1934, Fred was a lifelong resident of Tularosa and a proud graduate of Tularosa High School. He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force for four years before beginning a distinguished career as a firefighter at Holloman Air Force Base, where he served his community with dedication and pride.
Fred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Known for his kindness, generosity, and strong family values, he always put the needs of others before his own. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family and creating lasting memories with those he loved.
A rancher at heart, Fred enjoyed raising cattle and caring for horses. He loved taking his grandsons to the ranch, teaching them the importance of hard work, responsibility, and respect for the land. An avid outdoorsman, he found happiness in hunting, fishing, and spending time in the mountains. He also enjoyed visiting the Inn of the Mountain Gods and other casinos with family and friends.
Fred’s impact on those around him was immeasurable. He was a steady presence, a source of wisdom, and a man whose love for his family was evident in everything he did. His legacy of faith, hard work, and devotion to family will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa Utter; his daughters, Cynthia, Denise Thompson, and Eva; his son, Howard; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Utter Sr. and Ophelia Whitehead; his daughter, Stephanie Utter; his sisters, Yvonne and Ruthie Tyler; and his brother, Ernest Utter.
Rosary will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 10:00 am followed by Funeral Mass at 10:30 am at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church. Burial will immediately follow the services at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Leroy Ramos, Nicklus Travelino, Jacob Sedillo, Johnathan Gobeo, Gave Florez, and Charles Utter.
Honorary pallbearers are Paul Salas and Isaac Vigil.
Fred will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
