In Memory of Mary Ann Hines

Mary Ann Hines, 89, of Cloudcroft, NM passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, during a brief hospital stay with her family by her side. Born on April 7, 1935, in El Paso, Texas to Herman and Mary Lou (Tucker) Johnson, Mary Ann lived life on her own terms with grit, laughter, and just a little bit of mischief.

Mary Ann is survived by her daughter, Tana, and her "pard" Stephen Daugherty; her granddaughter, Casey (Paul) Griffin; her grandson, Clay (Dulcie) Griffin; her beautiful great grandchildren, Caden Griffin, Brynn and Brooke Bustamante. She also leaves behind her beloved sister-in-law, Bonnie Lou Johnson; niece, LuAnn; nephews, Steve and Ralph Johnson. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Herman "Skid" Johnson; her niece, Elaine Johnson; her husband, Johnny Hines; her son, John Sinclair Bales.

For over 40 years, Mary Ann made her home in the mountains of Cloudcroft, NM. An active member of the garden club, she planted many a whiskey barrel up and down Burro Ave., making sure the village stayed as colorful and vibrant as she was. She thrived in retail, working at The Copper Butterfly, Gypsy’s Wagon, and other shops along the boardwalk. After "the fire" in town, Mary Ann moved on to The Lodge where she worked in the gift shop and stepped in as a hostess whenever needed.

But her happiest days...those were spent at the golf course. Mary Ann loved the fairways almost as much as she loved giving her golfing buddies a hard time. From Wednesday night Scrambles to weekend tournaments, she was a fixture driving the beer cart and earning her well-deserved nickname, "Beer Babe." Above all, she cherished the people who made Cloudcroft feel like home. The friendships she formed in this beautiful mountain village were more than just acquaintances, they were family. Mary Ann found immense joy in the warmth, kindness, and unwavering support of her community, and she deeply valued the bonds she built over the years. Whether sharing laughter, lending a helping hand, or simply enjoying the beauty of the place she loved, she was profoundly grateful for your friendships that enriched her life. To those who walked beside her in love and friendship, please know that you were truly cherished.

Mary Ann was also passionate, and very vocal, about her beloved Dallas Cowboys. From the old days of Coach Landry and "Dandy" Don Meredith to today’s team, win or lose, they were always champions in her heart.

She gave 'em hell, and now she can rest.

A celebration of Mary Ann’s life will be held at The Lodge Golf Course at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 12, 2025. Please honor her by bringing your stories and your laughter. Let’s raise a glass, and of course, you are required to wear Cowboy Blue. She’ll be watching…

The Hines family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home.
