Alamogordo, NM — As we approach Saturday, June 20th, residents of Otero County are invited to gather at Washington Park for the City of Alamogordo’s Juneteenth Celebration, scheduled from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This free, family-friendly event promises vendors, live entertainment, good food, and meaningful community connection.

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the Civil War had ended and all enslaved people in the state were free. This came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The delay was largely due to the remote location and ongoing Confederate resistance in Texas.

The name “Juneteenth” is a blend of “June” and “nineteenth.” It became a federal holiday in 2021, but its roots run deep in African American culture. Celebrations traditionally include music, dance, red foods (symbolizing resilience and sacrifice), storytelling, and educational activities that honor the journey from enslavement to freedom and the continued fight for equality.

Why It Matters in Alamogordo

In a community like Alamogordo — home to Holloman Air Force Base, a diverse population, and a strong sense of small-town values — Juneteenth offers an opportunity to reflect on our shared American history while celebrating progress and resilience. Events like this bring together veterans, families, youth, and local leaders to recognize the contributions of all Americans and reinforce the principles of liberty and justice.

The striking promotional flyer captures the powerful symbolism of breaking chains, set against bold red, black, and green colors — colors long associated with Black liberation and African heritage. It’s a visual reminder that freedom is something to be actively celebrated and protected.
