Juneteenth, established on June 19, 1865, commemorates the day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to deliver news of emancipation—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. It is the oldest known celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States.
Why Juneteenth Matters to All People — While rooted in African American history, Juneteenth is a powerful American holiday that celebrates the universal ideals of freedom, resilience, and justice for everyone. It reminds us that the struggle for liberty and equality is a shared human story — one that benefits every citizen regardless of background. The delayed enforcement of emancipation in 1865 underscores how hard-won rights must be actively protected and extended to all. In a nation built on the promise that “all men are created equal,” Juneteenth calls on every community to honor progress, learn from history, reject division, and work together toward a more perfect union. It embodies the “glass half-full” spirit: acknowledging past challenges while celebrating advancement, second chances, and the strength found in unity.
In Alamogordo—with its rich military heritage at Holloman AFB and diverse population—Juneteenth fosters dialogue on freedom, resilience, redemption, and building an inclusive future for all residents.
“Glass Half-Full” Reminder: Events like this bring neighbors together to celebrate progress while acknowledging history, reinforcing the positive mindset that strengthens our town.
