By Chris Edwards, Alamogordo Town News - HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — The 49th Wing at Holloman Air Force Base marked a significant milestone on June 4, 2026, during a dual change of command and major command reassignment ceremony. U.S. Air Force Col. Michael S. Mullin assumed command of the 49th Wing from Col. John T. “Friar” Ethridge, as the wing officially transitioned from Air Education and Training Command (AETC) to Air Combat Command (ACC).
The ceremony, steeped in military tradition, symbolized both leadership continuity and a strategic realignment designed to enhance combat readiness. Maj. Gen. Roy W. Collins, AETC deputy commander, presided over the change of command, while Maj. Gen. Steven G. Behmer, 15th Air Force commander, officiated the reassignment. Attendees included Airmen, families, and community leaders.
Col. Mullin, who previously served as deputy commander of the 354th Fighter Wing at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, returns to Holloman for his second tour (having been stationed here from 2018–2021). In his remarks, Mullin expressed enthusiasm for rejoining the Alamogordo community: “Community leaders and partners, Shari and I are thrilled to be back in Alamogordo. We look forward to working with each and every one of you over the next two years to make our community and Holloman Air Force Base an amazing place to live and work.”
The reassignment to ACC represents a broader Air Force initiative to streamline training pipelines for fighter and remotely piloted aircraft units. Holloman, home to the primary F-16 Fighting Falcon and MQ-9 Reaper formal training units, is among the first such units to make this shift, aiming to accelerate readiness, reduce training gaps, and better integrate frontline tactics.
Outgoing commander Col. John T. Ethridge was awarded the Legion of Merit (First Oak Leaf Cluster) for his exceptional leadership over two years. Under his tenure, the wing managed over $3 billion in assets, produced more than 1,000 mission-ready aircrew for the U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps, and coalition partners, advanced innovative training, enhanced MQ-9 capabilities, and supported global operations. Chief Master Sgt. William Ford also concluded his role as command chief.
A Partnership That Sets the Standard
A highlight of Col. Ethridge’s command and the broader Holloman team’s efforts has been the exceptionally strong and collaborative relationship with Alamogordo’s civilian leadership. The partnership with Acting City Manager Dr. Stephanie Hernandez, former Mayor Susan Payne, and current Mayor Sharon McDonald stands out as a model of mutual respect and shared commitment.

Under the leadership of these dedicated public servants, the working relationship between Holloman AFB and the City of Alamogordo has arguably never been better. Their passion for a true partnership approach — one that recognizes the vital role of the military in our community’s economy, culture, and future — has fostered unprecedented levels of cooperation on issues ranging from economic development and quality-of-life initiatives to support for Airmen and their families.
This collaborative spirit serves as an inspiring example for communities across the nation. In an era when military-civilian relations can sometimes face challenges, Alamogordo demonstrates what is possible when leaders prioritize open communication, joint problem-solving, and a genuine commitment to supporting those who serve. Thanks to the vision and dedication of Dr. Hernandez, Mayor Payne, and Mayor McDonald, Holloman’s integration into the fabric of our community continues to strengthen, benefiting everyone involved.
As Col. Mullin takes the helm, Team Holloman and the City of Alamogordo look forward to building on this strong foundation. The “Fightin’ 49ers” remain central to America’s airpower projection, and our community stands ready to support their vital mission.
Alamogordo Town News congratulates Col. Mullin on his new command and extends deep appreciation to Col. Ethridge, Chief Ford, and the entire Holloman team for their service. We also celebrate the enduring civilian-military partnership that makes our corner of New Mexico truly special.
