This week, instructors from the Alamogordo Fire Department partnered with Mescalero Apache Fire Rescue to deliver a New Mexico Firefighters Training Academy (NMFTA) Emergency Vehicle Driver (EVD) Course in Mescalero.

The training brought together firefighters and emergency responders from multiple agencies across Otero County, fostering stronger regional partnerships while sharpening essential skills needed for safe and effective emergency operations.

Participants received comprehensive instruction combining classroom sessions with hands-on practical driving exercises. The curriculum covered critical topics including emergency vehicle operations, risk management, vehicle dynamics, and safe response practices designed to enhance driver proficiency under high-pressure conditions.

One of the greatest strengths of the fire service is our ability to work together,” said an Alamogordo Fire Department representative. “Training events like this help build relationships between agencies, improve interoperability, and ensure that when emergencies occur, responders can operate effectively as one team.”

The Alamogordo Fire Department expressed pride in supporting these regional training initiatives, which play a vital role in developing the next generation of skilled emergency responders throughout Otero County and beyond.

Mescalero Apache Fire Rescue was thanked for graciously hosting the course, along with all the dedicated students who invested their time and effort to elevate their skills and better serve their communities.

When we train together, we respond better together.

This collaborative EVD training underscores the commitment of local fire departments to professional development, public safety, and seamless inter-agency cooperation in the face of emergencies across southern New Mexico
