Alamogordo, NM – Local filmmaker Larry L. Sheffield delivered a powerful homecoming on Saturday, May 16, 2026, as the Flickinger Center for the Performing Arts hosted the Alamogordo premiere of his latest documentary, The Cosmic Trigger: Trinity 1945. The theater was filled with an enthusiastic hometown audience eager to explore the mysterious connection between the world’s first atomic test and the unexplained aerial phenomena that followed.
From the opening frames, Sheffield’s film captivated viewers with its masterful blend of rare declassified military documents, striking archival footage, compelling witness testimonies, and thoughtful expert analysis. The documentary thoughtfully examines the surge of anomalous sightings — including the famous “Green Fireballs” — reported over White Sands, Holloman AFB, and surrounding atomic sites in the years after the July 16, 1945 Trinity detonation. Rather than veering into speculation, the film grounds its narrative in historical records and official investigations, making it both informative and profoundly thought-provoking.
Audience members were visibly engaged throughout the screening, with many nodding in recognition of the local history woven into every scene. The energy in the room remained electric as the credits rolled, leading into a lively and extended Q&A session with Sheffield himself. Locals asked sharp, insightful questions ranging from the filmmaker’s research process and family ties to the Manhattan Project, to the broader implications of modern UAP disclosures.
The discussion was marked by curiosity, respect, and a genuine sense of wonder. Sheffield fielded every question with warmth, humility, and the deep knowledge that comes from years of dedicated research. The session concluded on a memorable and hopeful note when Sheffield reflected on the film’s central theme: we more than likely are not alone in the vast universe, and the Trinity test may well have been the flashpoint that drew attention from beyond our world.
The response from the crowd was overwhelmingly positive — a heartfelt applause, and excited conversations spilling out into the lobby long after the event wrapped. Many attendees described the evening as “mind-expanding,” “perfectly timed,” and “a true point of pride for Alamogordo.”
As an Alamogordo native with deep roots in the Tularosa Basin, Sheffield’s return to the Flickinger with this latest chapter in his acclaimed atomic history trilogy felt especially meaningful. This followed his family’s contribution of a historical clock to the downtown area which was recognized with a ribbon cutting at noon adding to The Weeknd’s events.
Following the success of Oppenheimer After Trinity and The Atomic Rocketeer, The Cosmic Trigger solidifies his reputation as one of New Mexico’s most compelling documentary voices.
Congratulations to Larry L. Sheffield and the entire production team on a triumphant hometown premiere! This film not only honors our region’s unique place in history but invites us all to look up at the night sky with fresh eyes and open minds.
Highly recommended — catch The Cosmic Trigger at future screenings or when it becomes available on wider platforms such as Amazon this fall
