Alamogordo, NM – April 1, 2026 – As spring breezes sweep across the Tularosa Basin, April has officially arrived as National Kite Month, a nationwide celebration inviting families, kids, and kite enthusiasts of all ages to step outside, look up, and let their dreams take flight.
Organized by the American Kitefliers Association, National Kite Month (April 1–30) highlights the simple joy of kite flying while promoting outdoor fun, creativity, science, and community connection. Whether you’re a seasoned flyer or picking up your first kite, the month-long event encourages everyone to “share the sky” with colorful creations dancing on the wind.
Here in Alamogordo, locals have the perfect opportunity to join the celebration in a truly unique setting. On Saturday, April 11, 2026, the “Dream Higher” 1st Annual Kite Festival will transform the peaceful grounds of Trinity Turtle Healing Labyrinth Park into a vibrant hub of family fun, creativity, and uplifting energy.
The free, all-ages event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the park, located at 7440 N Hwy 54/70 (about one mile north of McGinn’s PistachioLand). Hosted by CAPPED, Inc. — a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to wellness, education, and community healing — the festival blends the meditative calm of the park’s labyrinth with the high-flying excitement of kite building and flying.
What to Expect at the “Dream Higher” Kite Festival:
• 10 a.m. – Noon: Hands-on kite-building workshops in shaded tents. Free plain white kite kits are available for the first 80 kids ages 6–12 (while supplies last), complete with markers and plenty of helpers. Younger kids (under 6) and “young-at-heart” adults can grab free pinwheel kits (first 80).
• Noon – 1 p.m.: Grab a hot dog (donations appreciated) and enjoy a community lunch break.
• 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.: It’s time to fly! Bring your own kite or use one from the workshops and watch the sky fill with color.
• Dragon Kite Raffle: Register for your free first ticket; additional tickets are just $2 for one or $1 each (family packs available). Three chances to win beautiful dragon kites — drawings at noon (red), 2 p.m. (blue), and 4 p.m. (purple).
• On-site shopping: Commercial kites, special-design kites, string reels, and LED light kits will be available for purchase.
The Trinity Turtle Healing Labyrinth Park itself is a growing community wellness destination featuring a stunning labyrinth for peaceful walks and reflection, with a 12-site campground open 24/7. The festival perfectly pairs the labyrinth’s calming, intentional energy with the playful freedom of kite flying — a day to “Dream Higher,” connect with neighbors, and create lasting memories under the New Mexico sun.
“Mark your calendars and get ready to Dream Higher this April! Bring the whole family, fly a kite, and enjoy a day of simple fun in the New Mexico sunshine,” organizers encourage.
The event is completely free — no tickets or registration required (though raffle tickets are available on-site). All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For questions, text or call (575) 430-7798 or visit capped.org.
With National Kite Month just beginning, this local festival is the ideal way for Otero County families to celebrate spring, support a worthy nonprofit, and experience the magic that happens when kites meet the wide-open skies above the labyrinth.
Bring your kite (or make one there), pack a blanket, and get ready to look up — dreams really do fly higher in Alamogordo!
