Alamogordo, NM – March 18, 2026 – Jonathan Emery, a United States veteran and current Otero County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Deputy, candidate for Otero County Commission District 2 today issued a statement distancing his campaign from any involvement in the ongoing Republican Party chair controversy.
Emery, who is contesting incumbent Commissioner Amy Barela for the position of Otero County Commissioner District 2, emphasized that his decision to run was made jointly with his wife as a personal commitment to community service and had nothing to do with the incumbent nor any conspiracies to unseat her.
In the statement, Emery said he believes party leadership must follow established rules and guidelines. “If that means the Chair should step down or withdraw from candidacy, then that is what should happen,” he stated. “Consistent adherence to party guidelines is essential to maintaining public trust.”
A proud veteran and law enforcement professional who began his career with the Otero County Sheriff’s Office in 2009, Emery pledged to leave the office “better than he found it” — a philosophy he intends to carry into county government.
“Otero County is a place I’m proud to call home,” Emery said. “I’m running because I believe we need leadership that listens, acts responsibly with taxpayer dollars, and works every day to improve the quality of life for all our residents.”
Emery outlined five core priorities for his campaign:
• Fiscal Responsibility — Ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and efficiently
• Economic Development — Supporting small businesses and encouraging sustainable growth
• Infrastructure Improvements — Addressing roads, utilities, and essential services
• Public Safety — Strengthening support for law enforcement and maintaining safe communities
• Transparency & Accountability — Promoting open communication and ethical governance
He added, “You should leave it better than you found it.” Emery promised that, just as he has worked to improve the Sheriff’s Office since 2009, he will bring the same dedication and results-driven approach to the County Commission if elected.
Emery’s campaign focuses strictly on local Otero County issues and community needs. He and his wife view the run as a continuation of their long-standing service to the area rather than any partisan maneuvering.
