Alamogordo Tigers Track Teams Open 2026 Season Strong at Canutillo Invitational; Boys Secure 4th, Girls 7th with Early State Qualifiers in Sprints

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (March 1, 2026) — The Alamogordo High School boys and girls track and field teams kicked off their 2026 outdoor season with impressive showings at the two-day Canutillo Invitational in El Paso, Texas, held Friday and Saturday at Lowenburg Eagle Stadium. Competing against a deep field of more than 20 teams from New Mexico and West Texas, the Tiger boys placed 4th overall, while the girls finished 7th — highlighted by multiple podium finishes, personal bests, and early state-qualifying marks in the sprints.

The meet, hosted by Canutillo High School, drew top regional talent and served as a key early benchmark for Alamogordo in Class 5A. The boys’ team racked up points across sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws, led by senior Julian Benitez’s dominant victory in the 100m (10.89) — a time that provisionally qualifies him for the NMAA State Championships in May. The boys’ 4x100 relay team (Tristan Bowman, Nathan Cereceres, Keaton Orona, Julian Benitez) also punched their ticket to state with a gold-medal 42.36, edging out the competition in a thrilling final.

Other standout boys’ performances included:

• Nathan Cereceres: 4th in 200m (22.77) and 3rd in high jump (6-0)

• Tristan Bowman: 7th in 400m (54.76), 4th in triple jump (39-6), 8th in long jump (19-8)

• Sam Strong: 6th in 300m hurdles (46.50)

• Yadie Torrado: 9th in 110m hurdles (16.77), 4th in high jump (6-0), 6th in triple jump (38-1)

• Dylan Suggs: 1st in pole vault (11-0)

• Damien Moreno: 2nd in pole vault (10-0)

• Andrew Woolen: 8th in discus (126-11)

• Aaron Borrego: 11th in 3200m (11:22.91)

• Rylan Maroon: 12th in 800m (2:10.27)

• Matthew Snyder: 13th in 1600m (4:57.50)

• Dominic Padilla: 22nd in shot put (35-1.50)

• 4x200 relay (Damien Moreno, Keaton Orona, Jordan Allen, Sam Strong): 8th (1:34.41)

The Tiger girls showcased balanced scoring in sprints, hurdles, relays, and field events, with senior Sydney Hunter leading the charge via a bronze in the 400m (1:01.95) and 5th in the 200m (27.57). The 4x400 relay team (Sydney Hunter, Breanna Padilla, Zoey Spataro, Elizabeth Farmer) earned 3rd (4:16.80), while the 4x100 (Macey Sebring, Alynah Simental, Addison Chamberlain, Simone Pamphile) took 4th (50.73) and the 4x200 (Addison Chamberlain, Simone Pamphile, Macey Sebring, Breanna Padilla) placed 5th (1:49.44).

The Tigers return to action next weekend at the Artesia Invitational, building toward district and state meets. With early qualifiers already in hand, Alamogordo looks poised for another strong campaign in District 3-5A.
