TULAROSA, N.M. (March 1, 2026) — The Tularosa High School boys and girls track and field teams opened their 2026 season Friday at the RISD Early Bird Meet in Roswell, with the Lady Wildcats finishing 13th out of 20 competing teams and the boys tying for 16th in a field of 21 squads. While team scores reflected the early-season rust, several individual athletes posted strong marks, including top-10 finishes in distance and sprints that bode well for the program’s depth.
The meet, hosted by Roswell Independent School District at the Wool Bowl, drew teams from across southern New Mexico for one of the region’s first outdoor competitions of the year. Goddard dominated the girls’ side with 105 points, followed by Carlsbad (88) and Lovington (82). On the boys’ side, Goddard again led with 140 points, ahead of Carlsbad (107) and Artesia (85). Tularosa’s girls scored 16 points for their 13th-place finish, while the boys tallied 5 points to tie for 16th with Dexter.
Standout performances for the Lady Wildcats included sophomore Kayleigh Bigas, who doubled up in the distance events with a 9th-place finish in the 1600m (6:16.00) and a strong 4th in the 3200m (13:32.16) — one of the top early-season times in Class 3A. Senior Diana Casares clocked an 8th-place 1:09.16 in the 400m, showcasing speed that could anchor relays throughout the year.
Tularosa’s relay teams also contributed points: the 4x100 relay (Julianna Vazquez, Lilliah Bigrope, and others) took 10th in 1:02.36, while the 4x200 relay finished 8th in 2:12.89. In field events, Vazquez added a 10th in long jump (13-9), and Audrianna Valdez placed 22nd in discus (29-6).
Other Lady Wildcat results:
• 100m: Julianna Vazquez 31st (14.80)
• 200m: Lilliah Bigrope 29th (34.13)
For the boys, junior Mason Garcia led the way with an 8th-place finish in the 200m (25.00), highlighting sprint potential. Brooks Montoya competed in multiple events, placing 21st in the 400m (1:00.04) and 20th in javelin (102-4). Distance runner Brennan Tso gutted out the 800m (36th, 3:21.09) and 1600m (30th, 8:11.25), while the 4x100 relay team finished 12th (51.38).
In throws, Robert Trujillo took 22nd in discus (90-3), and Solon Elksilver placed 20th in shot put (34-2.5). Robert Sanchez rounded out the sprints with a 31st in the 100m (13.32).
The Wildcats head next to the Artesia Invitational on Saturday, March 7, where they’ll face familiar rivals including Carlsbad, Lovington, and the host Bulldogs. Full results from Roswell are available on MileSplit, with live updates expected for Artesia.
