Mayor Sharon McDonald Comments on Released Body Camera Footage in Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting – Full Statement and Community Update - AlamogordoTownNews.

Alamogordo, New Mexico – February 11, 2026 – Following the public release of Alamogordo Police Department body camera footage related to the January 13, 2026, officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 41-year-old Anthony Zane Blalock, Mayor Sharon McDonald has issued a detailed statement addressing the incident, the ongoing investigation, and her commitment to empathetic and transparent leadership for all segments of the community.

The body camera video, published by KRQE News 13, provides a clear view of the brief encounter and is available for viewing here. Note: The footage is graphic and may be disturbing.

The incident unfolded shortly before midnight when officers responded to a 911 report of a possible burglary at a residence in the 100 block of Virginia Avenue. After initial checks near a nearby cannabis dispensary, a resident directed officers to an armed individual in the backyard. Blalock emerged holding a knife with hands raised and advanced toward officers despite repeated commands to drop the weapon. The encounter escalated in seconds, with officers firing after approximately eight seconds from the point Blalock confirmed he was armed. Officers immediately provided aid, though Blalock was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured.

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau continues its independent review at APD’s request. No evidence of a burglary or additional persons was found, and lacerations on Blalock appeared self-inflicted. No charges have been filed as of this date, and the officers’ identities remain withheld during the active investigation.

Mayor McDonald’s statement reflects a balanced approach that honors the grief of the family, acknowledges the challenges faced by law enforcement, and reaffirms the importance of a thorough, impartial process:

In January, our community experienced an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of Mr. Anthony Blalock. As this matter resurfaces, we must remain mindful of the pain it brings, and I continue to express my sincere empathy to Mr. Anthony Blalock’s family and loved ones. The family has endured a profound loss, and my heart remains with them as they continue to grieve.

At the same time, I stand in support of our police officers and the difficult, often dangerous work they perform every day. Our officers are routinely placed in situations that require split-second decisions under intense pressure. They must approach every encounter cautiously, knowing that circumstances can escalate in moments.

I understand the community’s desire for answers. I share that desire. Waiting for the outcome of a thorough investigation can feel overwhelming. However, the facts are clear: a rushed investigation serves no one. We must allow the process to be complete, impartial, and grounded in evidence so the public can have confidence in the findings.

As Mayor, I believe it is important to understand situations like this from all perspectives, from Mr. Anthony Blalock’s family, from the officers involved, and from the broader community. Accountability and support are not mutually exclusive. We can hold space for both compassion and public safety.

In speaking with the City Manager, I can also share that as we move into the next budget year, training across the department will be thoroughly reviewed. We will ensure that all training provides the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to enhance preparedness while delivering the highest level of service and safety to our citizens.

This is a difficult situation for our community. I ask for patience and civility as we move through this process. I also encourage continued respectful dialogue. We move forward together when we listen with purpose.”
