Alamogordo, NM – February 9, 2026 – The Alamogordo High School girls’ wrestling team concluded their regional campaign with determination at the NMAA Region 2 Championships held Friday and Saturday, February 6-7, in Roswell. The Tigers placed 30th in the team standings during the two-day event at the Roswell venue, which served as the critical qualifier for the upcoming state tournament.
Highlighting the Tigers’ performance was Ava Armijo at 140 pounds, who battled through a tough bracket to finish in 6th place and earn automatic qualification to the 2026 NMAA State Wrestling Championships, scheduled for February 20-21 at the Rio Rancho Event Center.
Armijo demonstrated strong resilience and finishing ability, particularly in the consolation rounds where she recorded multiple pins:
• First Round: Win over Abby Garcia (Santa Teresa) by forfeit
• Quarterfinals: Loss to Olivia Ortiz (Belen) by fall (2:00)
• Consolation Round 2: Win over Peyton Parker (Clovis) by fall (2:12)
• Consolation Round 3: Win over Jayana Romero (West Mesa) by fall (2:10)
• Consolation Semifinals: Loss to Mayte Trevizo (Hobbs) by fall (2:16)
• 5th/6th Place Match: Loss to Mya Peralta (Rio Grande) by fall (2:38)
Her path showcased quick pins in the consolations, helping her advance deep and secure one of the qualifying spots from the region.

While the team finish reflected the competitive depth of Region 2, Armijo’s qualification stands as a major achievement for the program heading into the state meet.
Attention now turns to the Alamogordo boys’ wrestling team, who will compete at their NMAA Region 2 Championships this Friday and Saturday, February 13-14, in Albuquerque. As part of the 5A classification, the Tigers will face strong competition from across the region, with top placers advancing to the state tournament in Rio Rancho.
