Weekend December tournament season brought a full slate of basketball action across New Mexico, with area teams logging miles, testing depth, and delivering standout performances from Fort Sumner to Clovis to Capitan.
Fort Sumner Shootout: Mescalero Apache Shows Grit in Busy Weekend
The Mescalero Apache boys opened the Shootout with a 45–32 loss to Springer, despite a commanding 21‑point effort from Shywin Chaffins. The Chiefs fall to 4–7 and head to Alamo Navajo on Monday.
In their second matchup, the Chiefs battled Roy/Mosquero in a tight 43–37 contest.
Avin Yellowcloud led with 14 points, Chaffins added 9, Anthony Yuzos scored 7, and Deacon Martinez chipped in 6.
The Lady Chiefs also faced a tough tournament draw. Springer claimed a 53–40 win, with Kaylyn Chino leading Mescalero Apache with 14 points and both Lairah Davis and Bridgette Blake adding 8. The Lady Chiefs move to 3–8 and will host Ruidoso on January 5.
Roy/Mosquero later topped the Lady Chiefs 40–26.
Laurdis Sundayman led with 8 points, followed by Taylynn Ahidley with 6, and Davis and Blake with 4 each.
Capitan Tournament: Cloudcroft Splits Results, Finds Momentum
Cloudcroft’s girls opened with a tough 48–12 loss to Cliff.
Maitlyn Barnett and Cassia Moore each scored 3 points to pace the Lady Bears, who drop to 4–7 and next compete at the Jal Tournament on January 8.
The Lady Bears bounced back in style, defeating Mountainair 42–33.
Tristyn Housler led with 13 points, Aurora Trejo and Delanie Dallas each added 10, and Alyssa Singer contributed 7 in a balanced, confident win.
Tularosa Falls to West Las Vegas
The Tularosa Lady Cats slipped to 5–2 after a 47–31 loss to West Las Vegas.
They return home to host Magdalena on January 3.
Clovis Holiday Tournament: Alamogordo Girls Earn Honors
Alamogordo opened with a strong 42–32 win over Clovis, powered by 21 points from Madi Flores.
Mariah Allen added 9 and Julianna Centrella scored 6.
In the championship game, Gallup defeated the Lady Tigers 76–28.
Flores again led with 18 points, and both she and Allen were named to the All‑Tournament Team. Alamogordo drops to 4–5 and heads to the Hobbs Holiday Tournament on December 29.
Alamogordo Boys Surge Past Cathedral
The Tigers closed their weekend with an emphatic 86–54 win over Cathedral.
Jaedyn Hernandez scored 21 points, Julian Favela added 18, and Will Bynum delivered 17 as Alamogordo improved to 6–2. They next face Goddard on December 29 at the Poe Corn Tournament in Roswell.
