Alamogordo, NM — December 2, 2025
Basketball season tipped off across southern New Mexico Tuesday night, with several area teams opening strong while others faced tough competition.
Boys Basketball
• Mescalero Apache 55, Laguna Acoma 46
The Chiefs opened their season with a win behind Anthony Yuzos’ 19 points, while Jason Wilson added 10 and Deacon Martinez scored 8. Mescalero improves to 1–0 and heads to the Melrose Tournament on Thursday.
• Gateway Christian 48, Cloudcroft 38
The Bears dropped to 0–2 after falling to Gateway Christian. Cloudcroft looks to rebound at the Dora Tournament beginning Thursday.
• Tularosa 79, Hagerman 40
The Wildcats dominated behind a huge performance from Eluciano Gonzales, who poured in 31 points. Jacoby Apachito added 15, Cameron Holguin scored 12, and River Kasero chipped in 8. Tularosa improves to 1–0 and will host Santa Fe Prep on Saturday.
Girls Basketball
• Tularosa 40, Hot Springs 25
The Lady Cats opened their season with a convincing win. Kiah Zysk led with 12 points, Veronica Blazer scored 8, and Jaleria Caje added 5. Tularosa improves to 1–0 and heads to the Hatch Tournament Thursday.
• Laguna Acoma 46, Mescalero Apache 41
The Lady Chiefs fell in a close contest despite a strong effort. Mescalero drops to 0–1 and will compete next at the Melrose Tournament.
• Gateway Christian 26, Cloudcroft 23
The Lady Bears came up just short in their opener. Maitlyn Barnett led with 9 points, while Alyssa Singer added 5. Cloudcroft falls to 0–1 and will play at the Dora Tournament Thursday.
• Carlsbad 39, Alamogordo 32
The Lady Tigers battled but fell in their season opener. Madi Flores led with 13 points, while Addyson Gonzalez scored 8. Alamogordo drops to 0–1 and will face Artesia Thursday at the Artesia Tournament.
Looking Ahead
With tournaments in Melrose, Hatch, Dora, and Artesia on the horizon, area teams will have quick turnarounds to build momentum. Tularosa and Mescalero both look to continue strong starts, while Alamogordo and Cloudcroft aim to bounce back from opening losses.
Great stuff happening in Otero County! Time for some changes in Santa Fe the same way. The status quo since 2017 has done nothing for the state.

Agree about the importance of this current voting session. As an Independent I did consider it an opportunity not to be missed. I do believe my vote counts in NM, and I always vote my conscience, and I have some hopes for some of the close runoffs.
barela complained when senate bill 16 was passed - she was prescient - it would disturb the equilibrium in established party politics. and she was right - it tilted the republican vote out of her control. most excellent; democracy has once again raised it's ugly head....
and do not overlook the fact that republicans voted against senate bill 16 - it was filed by, supported by, and passed by democrats in our legislature - for the non-partisan purpose of protecting our democracy.

all in all, a fair and equitable solution...and intelligent to focus on sensible answers rather than continued litigation. now, if we can keep monster data centers away from the water and electrical markets, the little folks might be ahead - for a change.
