SANTA FE, NM — In a landmark moment for education equity, New Mexico’s Opportunity Scholarship has received the prestigious National Impact Award from College Promise, a leading nonprofit championing college accessibility across the United States.
The award, presented during College Promise’s 10th Anniversary Celebration at Palo Alto College in San Antonio, Texas, honors the scholarship’s sweeping impact on thousands of New Mexicans. With over 41,000 students currently enrolled tuition-free at the state’s 29 public colleges and universities, the program is now recognized as the most inclusive and comprehensive free-tuition initiative in the nation.
“This recognition reflects tens of thousands of New Mexicans whose lives have been transformed by the Opportunity Scholarship,” said Higher Education Secretary Stephanie M. Rodriguez. “Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has been clear: there is no wrong door to higher education in New Mexico. This administration is making that promise a reality.”
Unlike many tuition programs nationwide, the Opportunity Scholarship breaks barriers by supporting both part-time and full-time students, including summer enrollment, with no income requirements. It covers high-demand certificate, associate, and bachelor’s degrees—ensuring that working adults, parents, and first-generation students can access education on their own terms.
The results speak volumes: college enrollment in New Mexico rose 4.2% over two consecutive years, signaling a renewed commitment to learning and economic mobility across the state.
As part of the national celebration, the Opportunity Scholarship will be spotlighted by College Promise as a model for other states seeking to expand access to higher education.

thank you for a clear review of the coverage of this grievous occurrence. i would make several observations:
Sunny, with a high of 102 and low of 66 degrees. Sunny in the morning, clear overnight.
So, it went from a semi open primary to a closed selection process limited to registered democrats being eligible for selection? Interesting.
i have participated in a much smaller scope version of this same situation - about 20 years ago, as a precinct chairman of the democratic party in a rural east texas county. after the primary election, the democratic candidate for a seat on the county commission suddenly died.
So any candidate regardless of party affiliation may submit their name for consideration?
here's hoping for expansion in the elephant graveyard...i can hardly wait until november 3rd.
It can join the corpses at the ******* cemetary.
i visited the Sunspot observatory on my first trip through the Sacramentos, on a motorcycle ride in 1972, and have always included that site whenever introducing visitors to this many faceted region. it is sad to consider this unique scientific icon being demolished.
necessary housekeeping; clearly stated and documents due process and responsible action by their governing body - a fine model to follow.
It's all BS until the kids can read/write and do math at grade level.
