Alamogordo is preparing a heartfelt tribute this Saturday, September 27th, as the community welcomes home five local veterans returning from an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.—and shines a spotlight on four Vietnam-era heroes whose service and legacy deserve center stage. The event, hosted by the US Veterans Motorcycle Club – Trinity Chapter and the Patriot Guard Riders, will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Patron’s Hall, 1106 New York Avenue.

Residents are encouraged to gather near the Flickinger Center and along 12th Street between 7:00 and 7:30 p.m. to cheer the veterans’ arrival, which will be escorted from El Paso International Airport by law enforcement and a proud procession of veteran riders. Flags, handmade signs, and community spirit are all welcome as Alamogordo once again proves that honor lives here.

Among those receiving a hero’s welcome:

Thomas Contreras – U.S. Navy, Vietnam War Veteran

Thomas Contreras served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, contributing to operations that supported both combat and humanitarian missions in Southeast Asia. His service aboard ship exemplified the quiet strength and resilience of naval personnel during one of the most complex conflicts in American history. Contreras’s dedication reflects the steadfast commitment of sailors who often worked behind the scenes to ensure mission success.

James Ernst – U.S. Air Force, 20+ Years of Service

James Ernst retired from the U.S. Air Force after more than two decades of service, including extensive deployments during the Vietnam War. His career spanned multiple aircraft platforms and operational theaters, showcasing the technical mastery and endurance required of Air Force personnel. Ernst’s contributions helped maintain air superiority and logistical support during a time when every mission carried immense risk and responsibility.

Howard Moffitt – U.S. Air Force, Retired Major, Civil Engineering Corps

Major Howard Moffitt served 20 years in the Air Force, including critical years in Vietnam as part of the Civil Engineering Corps. His work in infrastructure, base operations, and environmental safety ensured that military installations remained functional and secure under hostile conditions. Moffitt’s leadership and engineering expertise were vital to sustaining operations and protecting lives in the field.

Marry Moffitt – U.S. Military Enlistee, Vietnam War Era

Marry Moffitt enlisted during the Vietnam War on a four-year contract, serving with distinction and representing the vital contributions of women in uniform. Her service laid the foundation for a life of commitment and partnership—she later met and married Howard Moffitt, forming a union rooted in shared values, military pride, and enduring love. Marry’s story reminds us that service takes many forms, and that women veterans deserve equal recognition for their courage and sacrifice.

A Community Tribute Rooted in Legacy

This Saturday’s reception at Patron’s Hall is more than a welcome home—it’s a rewriting of history. Vietnam-era veterans often returned to a nation divided, without the recognition they deserved. Alamogordo is changing that narrative, offering applause, gratitude, and lasting respect.

As reported by 2nd Life Media Alamogordo Town News, the Honor Flight experience includes visits to national memorials, moments of reflection, and a renewed sense of pride for veterans whose service shaped generations. The local rally is part of a broader movement to ensure that no veteran is forgotten—and that every story is preserved.
