Around the state of New Mexico the stadium lights blazed, and the roar of fans echoed from Alamogordo's homecoming to Farmington and Mescalero—Week 5 of New Mexico high school football was nothing short of electric.  With playoff implications looming and state rankings on the line, teams across the Land of Enchantment battled for glory, grit, and gridiron pride.

 Alamogordo Tigers Roar to Victory

In Alamogordo, the Tigers pounced on Organ Mountain with a commanding 34–14 win. Nathanael Best produced another solid effort rushing for 346 yards and two scores while picking up 15.0 yards per carry, and also throwing for 37 yards and a pair of TDs. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 145 rushing yards per game. The offense was sharp, the defense relentless, and the crowd at Tiger Stadium was on its feet as Alamogordo continued its mid-season surge. With district play approaching, the Tigers are shaping up to be a serious contender.

Mountain Teams Faced Tough Roads

It was a rough weekend for Otero County’s smaller programs:

Cloudcroft Bears were overwhelmed by Lordsburg 54–0, struggling to contain the Mavericks’ speed and depth.

Tularosa Wildcats showed flashes of defensive resilience but couldn’t find offensive rhythm, falling to Capitan 28–6.

Mescalero Apache Chiefs ran into a buzzsaw in undefeated Magdalena, suffering a 60–0 defeat. Coaches emphasized growth and development as the young squad continues to rebuild.

State’s Top Teams Shake the Rankings

The top five programs in New Mexico flexed their muscle—but not without drama:

Cleveland Storm stormed past El Paso Pebble Hills 42–17, proving why they’re still the team to beat.

Las Cruces High lit up Hobbs 52–13, solidifying their grip on the No. 2 spot.

Centennial Hawks barely escaped Carlsbad 21–20, raising eyebrows about their staying power.

La Cueva Bears clawed out an overtime win against Farmington 27–21, showing resilience after early-season setbacks.

Volcano Vista crushed Eldorado 35–7, making a strong case to leap into the top three.

Expect the rankings to shuffle as voters weigh dominant wins against close calls. Volcano Vista’s blowout and La Cueva’s comeback could shake up the leaderboard heading into Week 6.

Across the State: Highlights & Heartbreaks

Bloomfield delivered a jaw-dropping 65–0 shutout over Aztec, sending a message to 4A rivals.

Mayfield Trojans powered past Santa Teresa 45–22, showcasing offensive firepower.

Miyamura edged Valley 36–35 in a thriller, while Cibola held off Clovis 21–8 in a defensive slugfest.

Melrose, Valencia, and Magdalena continued to dominate in small-school action, each notching decisive wins.

 What’s Next?

With district play heating up and playoff dreams on the horizon, Week 6 promises even more fireworks. Alamogordo looks to build on its momentum, while Cloudcroft, Tularosa, and Mescalero Apache regroup for redemption.
