As the September sun settles over the Sacramento Mountains, Alamogordo is buzzing with anticipation. The Otero County Fair returns to the fairgrounds September 18–21, bringing with it a celebration of heritage, creativity, and community spirit that’s been a cornerstone of local life for over seven decades.
This year’s fair promises more than funnel cakes and Ferris wheels. It’s a showcase of local resilience, youth achievement, and cultural pride—with events designed to engage every generation.
Live Music & Rodeo Nights
On Friday, September 19, the fairgrounds will echo with the gritty, soulful sound of Scott H. Biram, joined by special guests Sasquatch & The Sick-a-Billys A. It’s a night of outlaw country and rockabilly rebellion—perfect for fairgoers who like their music raw and real.
Meanwhile, the 76th Annual Otero County Rodeo will light up the arena with barrel racing, bull riding, and roping competitions that honor the region’s ranching roots. Expect dust, adrenaline, and standing ovations.
Arts, Agriculture & Youth Excellence
Inside the exhibit halls, visitors will find a tapestry of local talent: photography, fine arts, home crafts, farm products, and student projects that reflect the diversity and ingenuity of Otero County. From hand-stitched quilts to hydroponic vegetables, every entry tells a story.
The Queen’s Pageant returns with a renewed focus on agricultural knowledge and leadership, empowering young women to represent their communities with confidence and purpose.
Family Fun & Community Connection
The fair isn’t just entertainment—it’s education. Families can explore interactive booths, meet local nonprofits, and learn about everything from STEM programs to health resources. Food served up will include everything from green chile cheeseburgers to Navajo tacos, while local vendors offer handmade goods and fair-themed merchandise.
Beyond the Fair: Alamogordo’s September Lineup
The fair is just the beginning. September also brings:
• 4th Friday at Washington Park – Sept 26, featuring Hear No Evil live on stage
• Battle of the Food Trucks: Round 4 – Oct 11 at Washington Park
• Corks & Shells Wine & Pistachio Festival – Oct 18 at Alameda Park
Why It Matters
In a time when rural communities are often overlooked, the Otero County Fair reminds us that local matters. It’s where Alamogordo’s past meets its future—where tradition is honored, voices are heard, and new stories begin.
Whether you’re riding the Ferris wheel, cheering at the rodeo, or admiring a student’s first painting, you’re part of something bigger: a community that shows up, speaks out, and celebrates together.
