The public is demanding answers around issues at Friday night's Alamogordo High School Football game. The game began with delays due to lightning, then a fight and police action in the parking lot, more game delays and then an announcement of an order to fans to evacuate the stadium. Student athletes were rushed off the field to a safe location. Then without notice to the parents and fans, the game continued till 20 minutes before midnight in a stadium empty of worried parents and fans.

The topic of transparency around school lockdowns  and evacuations has been a point of concern in Alamogordo, “transparency in every area” of school governance was prominent in the prior campaigns by school board candidates. Angela Cadwallader, Shannon  Wright, and Brandy Murphy. Student safety and quick transparency to parents was promoted as a reason for change for new leadership and as a reason to oust incumbents.

The official APS School Board page provides contact information for board members, which could be useful for parents reaching out directly to request clarity on lockdown protocols and public communication failures.

Given the recent evacuation at the August 29, 2025, football game, many in the community are asking: Where is the transparency we were promised?

The events at the August 29, 2025 football game—delays, arrests, and ultimately an evacuation due to a reported “threat," were chaotic and deeply unsettling for families, students, and the broader community. When candidates pledge transparency, especially around safety protocols and speedy transparency to the parents that promise should extend to moments like this.

Here’s what we know so far:

• The game was interrupted multiple times due to lightning delays and a fight in the parking lot that led to arrests.

• The final evacuation was reportedly due to a “threat,” though no further details have been publicly released by APS or law enforcement.

• Social media lit up with frustration, not just about the disruptions, but about the lack of clear communication especially concerning the evacuation, and then the call to continue play from school officials after the evacuation without any information to parents during and after the incident.

One parent emailed AlamogordoTownNews.org and said, "with the recent school shooter in Minneapolis and the order to evacuate the stadium I was worried. Then when I heard my child was back on the football field playing and not a word to parents about what was going on, I was angry- parents must be informed what is going on when their childs safety is a risk."

Transparency was a campaign promise, the community and most especially parents deserve more than vague statements.

Parents and students should be informed about:

• What the threat was and how it was assessed leading to the evacuation?
• Why the evacuation decision was made and who made it?
• What protocols were followed and whether they were effective?
• What will change going forward to prevent similar confusion or danger and better communication with concerned parents?

This is a moment where real leadership means facing the public, not hiding behind silence. If school board members want to show what accountability looks like, this is the time to speak up—with clarity, compassion, and a commitment to speedy communications to parents ans the public around safety.

We call for official transparency immediately on who was making the calls snd who was responsible for parental notifications?
