Save the Date: Mother’s Day Celebration Benefits La Luz Pottery

Image

Celebrate Mother’s Day and support the historic La Luz Pottery Factory during a pottery sale and fundraising dinner on May 10. Each handcrafted or wheel-thrown ceramics piece to be offered for purchase at the dinner was created at La Luz during classes that continue the factory’s historic legacy of producing outstanding ceramics.
To support upkeep and operations on the historic site, the dinner will be modelled on “Empty Bowl” events held throughout the country where soups are served in bowls offered for purchase at the dinner. Pottery pieces donated by ceramics artists taking classes at the La Luz Pottery Factory will also be featured in a silent auction with one-of-a-kind ceramics artworks made at the historic location.

A Southern New Mexico treasure, La Luz Pottery dates to the 1930s when the factory turned out monumental pieces and utilitarian roof tiles. Built by the wealthy New England industrialist Roland Hazard, the factory created over 90 styles of pottery that were actively collected around the world before it closed in 1949.

Today, La Luz Pottery continues its legacy of creativity by offering classes to ceramics students from beginners to experienced potters. The factory is run entirely by volunteers and supported by the nonprofit Tularosa Basin Historical Society.

Tours of the historic location are also available through the Tularosa Basin Museum of History on Saturday mornings. Call 575-434-4438 to schedule a tour and discover the wonders of this historic site.
