Alamogordo Police Officer Anthony Ferguson is remembered and tribute is paid to his honor via a new program the city of Alamogordo and the Alamogordo Public Schools has been working on planning and launching since last year.

Now as we roll into the spring of 2024, Alamogordo Public Schools and the City of Alamogordo are proud to announce their joint partnership in launching the Ferguson Academy, a unique summer internship program aimed at providing valuable training and experience for local students interested in law enforcement and public safety careers.

Named in honor of Fallen Officer Anthony Ferguson, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty, the Ferguson Academy represents a collaborative effort between the education and law enforcement sectors to empower and educate the youth of Alamogordo. This initiative pays tribute to Officer Ferguson's dedication to serving his community and his commitment to fostering the next generation of public servants.

Officer Ferguson had a deep affection and commitment to our community, particularly towards the youth. This is why the collaboration between the Alamogordo Public Schools and the City of Alamogordo holds such significance. It serves as a tribute to Officer Ferguson in a manner that authentically reflects his values, and I believe he would be proud of it,” shared Stephanie Hernandez, Assistant City Manager.

The Ferguson Academy will offer selected student interns the opportunity to work closely with certified police officers and firefighters over three weeks in July. During this time, interns will undergo comprehensive scenario-based training covering a wide range of topics essential to law enforcement and emergency response, including criminal investigations, evidence collection, offender apprehension, emergency first-aid, critical incident response, and de-escalation techniques.

The interns will work closely with certified police officers and firefighters and will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in law enforcement and become CPR-certified.

Acting Superintendent Michael Crabtree expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "The Ferguson Academy represents a remarkable opportunity for our students to gain hands-on experience in the fields of law enforcement and public safety. We are

proud to collaborate with the City of Alamogordo and the Alamogordo Police Department in honoring Officer Ferguson's legacy while providing our students with invaluable learning experiences."

Chief of Police David Kunihiro emphasized the significance of the program, "The Ferguson Academy stands as a testament to the remarkable legacy of Officer Anthony Ferguson, a man who served his community and ultimately lost his life serving and protecting the Alamogordo community. At its core, the Ferguson Academy symbolizes our commitment to fostering positive community relationships. Moreover, it provides students with invaluable firsthand exposure to police and fire operations, paving the way for potential careers right here in our local community."

The Ferguson Academy is not only a testament to Officer Ferguson's enduring legacy but also a reflection of the unwavering dedication of Alamogordo's educational and public safety institutions to the betterment of their community

Through this partnership, Alamogordo Public Schools and the City of Alamogordo reaffirm their shared commitment to nurturing talent, promoting safety, and fostering a spirit of service among the youth of Alamogordo.
