At the Toy Train Depot in Alamogordo, visitors can expect a miniature railroad museum housed in a historic 1898 wooden depot, a park train ride, and an extensive collection of artifacts.

The non-profit organization is largely run by volunteers who are happy to share their wealth of railroad knowledge. Highlights of your visit typically include:

A train ride through Alameda Park: Enjoy a ride on a 16-inch gauge miniature train pulled by a diesel engine or an operating steam engine. The ride is about two miles long and travels through Alameda Park, offering a scenic and relaxing journey.

Operating model train layouts: Explore detailed model train layouts covering a variety of gauges (scales), from the tiny Z gauge to the popular HO gauge. One thousand-square-foot HO layout depicts 1940s-era Alamogordo.

Museum exhibits: The historic depot building showcases hundreds of model locomotives and railroad artifacts, including semaphores, lanterns, and tools.World's smallest working train: The museum's collection includes what is billed as the world's smallest working train.

Interactive experience: Knowledgeable and passionate volunteers lead guided tours, which can be tailored to your group's interest level and time constraints.

A small play area: Kids can enjoy a small indoor waiting room with toys.

Gift shop: A selection of railroad items, books, and model trains are available for purchase.

Proximity to Alameda Park: Located within Alameda Park, the depot is close to playgrounds and picnic areas, making it a great family-friendly destination.

You can even get dropped off at the park's far end to walk to the Alameda Park Zoo, then call to be picked up.
