In Memory of Billie Jane (Ewell) Underwood

Billie Jane (Ewell) Underwood, age 84 years, passed from this physical life on March 5, 2025 in Alamogordo, New Mexico. She was born at home and delivered by her beloved maternal grandmother, Nancy Elizabeth Proffitt, on November 7, 1940 in Abilene, Texas. Billie Jane was the only daughter of Volena Sarah (Proffitt) Ewell and Christopher Dawson Ewell and sister to older brother, Bobby Wayne Ewell.

On January 19, 1961, Billie Jane married Jimmy Lew Underwood after meeting in Colorado City, Texas in high school. From this union, Kimberly Dawn and Randy Scott were born in 1963 and 1965 respectively.

Known as "BJ" in the work world, Billie found her calling in customer service as an Executive Administrative Assistant for churches, insurance companies, chiropractic clinics and oilfield service companies. She was the friendly face for these Odessa companies for many years.

Billie was a "health food nut" before it was 'cool' to be such. If she never prescribed a vitamin or supplement for your current ailments, then you really never knew her. Health food research was definitely her passion, especially in the early years.

After retiring at age 60 to care for her mother Volena, the two ladies became a powerhouse as prayer warriors for the community. These ladies prayed over Odessa's government, literacy, school system, and local business needs as well as personal financial, health and relationship needs in the community. Billie Jane lived modestly while sharing her blessings with local non-profit organizations, Christian churches, as well as individuals she encountered throughout the years.

Even in her last days, Billie would pray for the hospice team that visited her every week. She died peacefully with her son Randy, daughter Kim, and adopted daughter Jana Walker by her side. Billie was preceded in death by her parents, brother Bobby and his wife Donna and their children, Lawrence, Lelan and Deborah Colleen.

She is survived by her daughter Kim, son Randy, granddaughter Alexzandra, and adopted daughters Jana Walker, Debra Saul-Underwood and grand-dog Sami Jo who loved bark-talking to her on the phone every chance she got.

The family would like to thank Donna Miller with Alamogordo Hospice for her love and care for our mom during this very difficult time in her life. Also special thanks to Linda Hanks, Brandi & Thomas Cobos, and Ruth Coskrey for their loving support and friendship with mom while she lived in Odessa. At mom's request, her ashes will be spread among God's beauty in the Sacramento mountains of New Mexico. There will be no service at this time. If you would like to memorialize mom in some manner, please consider a donation to the Permian Basin Mission Center, your local Meals on Wheels organization, or a Christian charity of your choosing.
