Guest Commentary Alamogordo School Board's New Direction Sparks Concerns

Since the inauguration of new members earlier this year, the Alamogordo Public Schools School Board has been in a flurry of activity. However, amidst their proclaimed agenda of transparency and reform, concerns have arisen among parents, educators, and community members regarding the potential ramifications of their decisions on the district's educational outcomes.
Of particular concern is the board's decision to place Superintendent Pam Renteria on leave, despite the notable academic improvements witnessed under her leadership. Recent data presented during the February 8th board meeting showcased an overall increase in every school's rating district-wide, a commendable feat under Renteria's guidance. With three schools now designated as "Excellence," the district has seen a remarkable turnaround, with no schools carrying critical designations anymore. Moreover, reading scores across all grade levels have shown significant improvement. It is fair to point out that the area of concern district wide is math achievement. Overall, APS has students heading in the right direction academically. However, the board's action seems predetermined, driven more by personal motives than an assessment of performance.
It's evident from the board's meeting agendas that the decision to oust Renteria was brewing from the outset. However, the issues listed on these agendas appear to predate Renteria's tenure as acting superintendent, raising questions about the board's true motivations. The ongoing investigation into a procurement issue, which was approved unanimously by the previous school board that included now Board President Cadwaller, adds to the suspicion surrounding their actions.
This move to remove Renteria appears to be motivated by a desire for change rather than a genuine commitment to student welfare. If the board proceeds with this decision, taxpayers could find themselves footing the bill for yet another contract buyout, a recurring pattern in Alamogordo's recent history.
Furthermore, the appointment of an acting superintendent lacking significant support due to the many unfilled positions at the district level and little central office experience has only added to the uncertainty. The board's tendency towards top-down changes without consulting key stakeholders further undermines confidence in their leadership.
The abrupt leadership transition has left educators and staff feeling unsettled about the district's future direction. With Alamogordo Public Schools now witnessing its fourth superintendent in less than four years, concerns about continuity and stability in leadership are justified. The prospect of a fifth superintendent in under four years under this board raises red flags and could threaten the district's autonomy from state intervention.
Renteria's extensive tenure with APS and the district's recent progress under her guidance underscore the need for a thorough evaluation of the board's actions. It begs the question: what is the board's true purpose, if not for the betterment of student outcomes?
While change can be beneficial, it must be approached with caution and transparency. The Alamogordo community must hold the new school board accountable for their decisions, ensuring they prioritize the district's long-term success over personal agendas. Failure to do so risks undermining the educational achievements and morale within Alamogordo Public Schools.
