ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — The Alamogordo Tigers will open the Class 5A state playoffs against a familiar face. The NMAA's bracket, released Sunday, seeds Alamogordo No. 5 and pairs the Tigers with No. 12 Chaparral in the first round — the same Lobos team they routed 55-7 just two nights earlier.
The NMAA held the 2A–6A brackets until Sunday after severe flooding in northwestern New Mexico forced schools to reschedule games. First-round games are set for Nov. 6–7. As the higher seed, Alamogordo is in line to host, though the game site and kickoff time had not been announced Sunday evening.
Friday's regular-season finale in Chaparral was never close. The Tigers posted their highest point total of the season, while the Lobos managed only a single touchdown.
Alamogordo (6-4) enters the postseason on a four-game winning streak, a sharp turn from a 2-4 start. Head coach AJ Cisco's team opened with wins over Santa Fe (41-33) and at Goddard (28-27), then dropped four straight to Clovis, Organ Mountain, Roswell and Artesia.
The defense drove the turnaround. After giving up 81 points in Week 0, the Tigers allowed just 47 total over their last four games — under 12 points a night. The offense has kept pace, putting up 48 against Deming on Oct. 22 before the 55-point outburst at Chaparral.
The Tigers are also in their first season in Class 5A. Alamogordo dropped down from 6A in the NMAA's 2026 realignment and joined District 2-5A alongside state powers Artesia and Roswell.
Chaparral (4-6) limps in, having lost six of its last seven. The Lobos started 3-0 before district play caught up with them.
A win would send Alamogordo to the quarterfinals against No. 4 Los Lunas, which earned a first-round bye. Beyond that, the top half of the bracket runs through No. 1 Roswell, which beat the Tigers 56-26 in September.
