Washington Street Bridge on 10th Street is scheduled for a temporary repair effort on order to again open access. In a statement from the city of Alamogordo they have reported a plan to repair and reopen.
"Following our review of a model design created for the drainage running within the Washington Avenue Canal, it was decided that the Concrete Box Culvert (CBC) at E 10th Street and WashingtonAvenue is to be constructed in a larger size, and will serve as a permanent storm drain with an estimated lifespan of 25 years or more.
Because the design phase of this project can take up to a year, the City would like to re-open the bridge to traffic while the new Concrete Box Culvert is in design. We have contacted a Structural Engineer to obtain an alternative solution for opening the bridge safely.
This solution will be temporary, and will allow the design to be finalized in the meantime.
Construction in the area is set to pick up in the next few weeks. The bridge contractors will begin sealing the cracks in the bridge following the Structural Engineer’s upcoming collaborative determination of all desired specifications. There will soon be an expansion in the traffic control plan on a temporary basis to also allow water line maintenance and upgrades near the bridge.
That work is being fast tracked ahead of schedule in a collaborative effort to minimize traffic disruption. This collaboration was encouraged by the city, with work to be conducted by La Luz Paving and General Hydronics Utilities in an effort to fast track and ensure traffic is not further blocked later in the summer. The effort to fastrack this traffic diversion, ahead of plan schedule, will mitigate a further traffic disruption. This work will be completed during the temporary bridge repair process.
