Some days in history we will always remember where we were when, 5-30-24 will go down in history as one of those days.

Donald J Trump will now go into the history books as the first president to be twice impeached and the first president in history to be a convicted felon.

Note: the Democratic Party of Otero County is no longer an active chartered organization since September of 2023, it was suspended by the state party due to infighting and ongoing investigation.

The Republican Party of New Mexico which has been harsh on the governor of New Mexico concerning a spike in crime and claims to represent law and order and backing the blue stated:  ”Today, a biased Manhattan jury found former President Trump guilty on charges associated with "hush money" payments made to Stormy Daniels.

"From the beginning, we've contended this trial was a witch hunt against President Trump and countless legal experts have concluded this trial was a sham and politically motivated. Through a leftist prosecutor and judge with a political vendetta, the Biden administration and Democrats have dangerously weaponized the judiciary against their biggest political opponent to detract from the mess President Biden has made of our country. That is a dangerous precedent to set for democracy that should concern every American. Meanwhile, New Mexicans are struggling to afford to feed their families, buy gas, and cope with the crime and drugs flowing through our open border, all as a result of the Biden administration's policies. New Mexicans will decide if a prosperous and secure future for their families is more important than a witch hunt trial in November.”

Pearce concludes, "Ask Democratic leadership in NM why an equal investigation has not been brought against Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, and her alleged hush money payments made from her campaign funds."

New Mexico's representatives and senators in Congress weighed in on the verdict. Four of the five have released statements on the guilty verdict Thursday against former President Donald Trump.

Sen. Martin Heinrich -"No one is above the law — not even a former president. Today the law prevailed over revenge and retribution."

Sen. Ben Ray Luján -"No one is above the law. ... These charges are serious and make it clear that he is unfit to serve as president. This verdict must be respected."

Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández -"America is a country that is built on the rule of law. An independent jury of 12 listened to the evidence, and America listened alongside them. We heard weeks of testimony that detailed how Trump had an affair with a porn star and then paid her off so that the story would not come to light during the 2016 election. That was a moral failing. The jury found that he broke the law when he lied about the payments and tried to hide them from the American people.

"Americans are a moral people. Americans are a people who believe in the rule of law. A criminal court has found that Trump is a felon, a corrupt politician, and not a man of moral integrity."

Rep. Melanie Stansbury - “Donald Trump is guilty. Today, he learned that no one is above the law. Never in American history has a U.S. president been convicted of a felony offense. Today, a Manhattan jury found Donald Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of fraud. Donald Trump is a con man, that has spent his life conning and defrauding those around him in business and in government. Today it is clear he is convicted of defrauding the American people.

He can no longer be allowed to con the American people into thinking he is worthy of leading. He never was, and he never will be. Today, the justice system did what it was supposed to do — to hold the guilty accountable."

Critics of the process claim the trial should have been moved because, Mr Trump could not get a fair trial in Manhattan, a city he lived in for over 60 years, made billions from and is the base of his business empire.

A question for those naysayers if not Manhattan, where would be a fair trial?

If those argue, no where, then there is a hypocrisy in supporting any criminal conviction by a jury of any individual or so that is the sentiment of many Independents, Democrats and yes, law and order Republicans.

One either supports the criminal justice system or one doesn’t; it can’t be both ways says one local Republican speaking against the local party leadership but asked for his name to be shielded for fear of retaliation against his business.

And so that is the world of division we live in today, and that is the true legacy of Thursdays decision- a nation deeply divided on their viewpoint of right and wrong as the variety of interviews and comments above demonstrate - a nation divided.
