The City of Alamogordo welcomes the public to meet and get to know the new Alamogordo Fire Chief Jerry Ramirez.

Chief Ramirez assumes the job familiar with our local community and its needs with over 25 years of firefighting experience, including his former role as Deputy Chief.  Chief Ramirez brings a deep passion for the job and a commitment to community safety.

The city sat down with Chief Ramirez for a chat about his goals and thoughts on our fire department. Here's a glimpse shared with the public and forwarded to AlamogordoTownNews.com and KALH Radio to further spread the word of Mr. Ramirez’s vision and goals for AFD.

Question: What do you like most about being a firefighter?

Chief Ramirez Response: “Being able to help people, save lives and property. I like the unity, what they call brotherhood, being able to show up to work, and get the job done. Working alongside my brothers and sisters. Outside of work the unity carries over, so if you’re having something to do like yard work, moving, you reach out to your brothers and sisters within the Fire Department, and they are always there to help and lend a hand. We all come from different walks of life, so one might be very ingrained in building construction, or small engine maintenance. So, you can always lean on your brothers and sisters to get the job done.”

Question: What are your goals as fire chief?

Chief Ramirez Response: “So the first one is apparatus. That to me is a number #1 priority, it’s our bloodline within the fire department. If those apparatus are not working the firemen cannot do their job. Those apparatus need to be functional and operational. Stay working and go on moments notice.”

Question: What do you like about Alamogordo?

Chief Ramirez Response: “I love the small-town atmosphere. I love being able to get from one point of the city to another. I know the city is growing but you travel to these larger cities, and you have to deal with all the issues that comes with the big cities. Not saying that Alamogordo doesn’t have that but, it’s on a smaller scale. I like being able to talk to somebody when you’re at a restaurant or you go to something and you’re not considered just like everyone else like these bigger cities, you have that smaller unity.”

Question:  What would like the people of Alamogordo to know about their fire department?

Chief Ramirez Response: “We are a very aggressive department; meaning we are there in a moment's notice and aggressively attack the fire to help save lives, and property. So, whether it be someone who is having a medical emergency, to their house being on fire, or even as much as getting iguana’s out of the house, or cats out of the tree. We are there for all of it and continue to grow our department to better serve the citizens of Alamogordo."

Question:  Any final thoughts?

Chief Ramirez Response:“This has been a lifelong dream of mine, since my dad was a fireman, I was taken to the fire station at a very young age, growing up through it. It was always a dream of mine to being a Chief of a Department whether it be a volunteer department or a career department, I wanted to be a Fire Chief.”
